Use vinegar to keep color from fading

Everyone hates it when they buy a cool black t-shirt or black jeans and a couple month later they are starting to fade. Here is a way to reduce the chances of that. When you wash them for the first time, put just a 1/4 cup of vinegar in the wash machine and run the washer. The vinegar locks the color into the fabric in much the same way it does Easter eggs.

Vinegar also is good for removing scale deposits like calcium and soap scum and therefore reducing the molding issues... and reducing chance of maintenance and servicing/break down.

Not just for darks

Washing an item in a vinegar rinse is also one of the simplest ways of setting the colours in a shirt after tie-dyeing it, so that they don't wash out the very first time you wash the shirt after dyeing it.

Vinegar - Many Uses
by: Anonymous

I have also found that if I wash colored clothes the first time with 1/2 cup of vinegar, the clothes keep their color longer. Also, I use vinegar for odors, we live on a hog farm and my husband can come home in some pretty rank clothes. The vinegar eliminates the odor in one cycle.

multi use for vinegar in laundry chores
by: Lynn

Although vinegar has a multitude of uses it rate in the top 5 for laundry uses. I often use it in the rinse water to remove soap residue. Also I sometimes use it as a fabric softener when I run out of the commercial brands

Good for sweat stains also
by: Anonymous

Great use of vinegar. I also like using a solution of half vinegar/half water to spray on underarm stains. I let it sit about 10 minutes then launder as usual. Very good for getting the yellow out.
