Samsung VRT Silver Care Front Loading Washing Machine

by Aldona Ahlm
(Cumming, GA)

I bought the Samsung VRT Silver Care Front Loading Washing Machine one and a half years ago after moving into a home with a second story laundry room. I knew I wanted a front loader to minimize the use of water and the drying time for my loads of laundry.

Vibration during the spin cycle was a primary concern to me when looking for a new machine. The VRT technology of the Samsung uses ball bearings to balance to front loading machine during the spin cycle and it works very well. I have had no noise or vibration issues with this machine. Sometimes during the start of the spin cycle for just a second or two you will hear a humming and feel a very small amount of vibration as the ball bearings balance the machine but it is nothing compared to the constant sound of a top loading machine during the entire length of the spin cycle.

A secondary reason to chose this machine over other front loaders was the silver care technology. It disinfects the cloths during the wash cycle with the use of tiny amounts of silver. You can choose to use this or not when you start the washing cycle. I am happy with this option because I can feel confident that my children are wearing truly clean cloths.

I have had no problems or complaints with how well the machine washes cloths. My cloths come out clean with every use. I like the
fact there are many cycle options including an extra wash, rinse, or spin. Being a mother of two young children I have washed some very dirty and stained cloths in this machine with great success. My delicates come out very clean and undamaged as well.

The only problem I have had with this machine is that from time to time a moldy smell will appear when you open the door to throw a load in. I have found that if you remove the tray where you pour the detergent, bleach, and fabric softener you will see mold accumulating in the tray. I wash it with bleach and run a load of whites using bleach and the problem goes away for quite some time. I have also found that leaving the door open in between cycles minimizes this. This may only be a regional problem as I live in the southeast where the humidity and temperature are higher than in other areas.

On the whole I am very satisfied with the Samsung VRT Silver Care Front Loading washing machine and would highly recommend it to any one looking for a front loader. If you have a second story laundry room this machine is a must have as the noise level is minimal. After coming from a home with a top loader Maytag machine that made so much noise that my kids would wake up from nap during a spin cycle this machine is a life saver and makes doing laundry easy.

Never buy Samsung again! NEW
by: Anonymous

Had same issue as others with the aluminum "spider gear" my washer wouldn't drain I pulled out what I thought were rocks from the boot in the washer.

A few weeks later I came home from a trip to the store while doing a load and smelt something what I thought was electrical burning. Long story short the bracket that holds the drum corroded apart and there was so much friction it filled my house full of smoke and I am lucky I came home in time to shut it down.

To be fair they are not the only company that builds with this type of material. Do your homework before you buy.

4 years and ripping clothes and leaking NEW
by: Bmorter@comcast.net

One star because zero or minus is not an option. Our front loader is under four years old. It is pulling threads out bed sheets and shirts. Little metal burrs forming on tub which leaks. Called Samsung - lady said tub was under warranty. Technician from the fulfillment company left an estimate for $1200 for parts AND labor. Buying Consumer Reports top rated Maytag for several hundred dollars less than the repair estimate.

Samsung - don’t lie to customers AND don’t make bad equipment.

Spider Flandge and SMELL NEW
by: Appliance Queen

For those who still have a working washer, switch to a powder detergent and stop using liquid fabric softener. Both liquids have silicones in them and they attaches itself to the inside of the washer. It hardens and traps water, lint and other stuff. That is where the smell comes from. Instead, I use a tablespoon of salt in the main wash cycle and again in the rinse cycle to soften my terrible hard water in addition to the powder detergent. I then use the Tide fabric softener brick in the dryer. To clean out the washer I used Tide washer cleaner two times in a row, then used white vinegar in the main wash cycle for over two months.

Mine is now Seven Years Old with No Smell in my washer or my towels and cloths and hopefully no sign of Spider Flange problems.

Wow! Now that more time has gone by, more people have been experiencing the same issue. I found this video to show the exact problem. I'm lucky that mine hasn't broken yet, but I do carry a warrantee that covers all cost. If it were me, I sure would be on the phone with Samsung demanding a credit towards the purchase of a new washer. Here is the link:

Samsung VRT Washer Spider Flange NEW
by: Mike

This was my first front load washer, and maybe last, purchased May 2011. 5 years and 11 months is all it took for the spider flange in this Samsung VRT Steam to fail. We are a family of 2 adults. If Samsung would make this flange out of stainless steel or some material other than the cast aluminum they used maybe it would last. The repair company I called told me to just junk it their repair cost would be more than half the cost of a new washer. This machine looks brand new and I could buy a couple of hundred dollars of parts and repair it myself with help to remove the drum but I am junking it for a top loader. Yeah we left the detergent bin and front door open and dried the rubber gasket but it still stunk.

Same problem here. Owned this machine for 6 years. We now have a very loud squeaking/banging sound, and the machine will not complete a spin cycle without an error message. I found lots of grey/white/rust debris in the filter, this appears to be oxidized metal. We spent about $1000 on this machine when we bought our new house. What a piece of junk! I will never purchase another Samsung appliance again.

5 Year Old Samsung VRT Spider Broken NEW
by: MarioD

Our 5 year young $1500 Samsung top of line VRT and Steam clean bangs like crazy...and found some white sediment and chunks at drain filter...and then hit Google. OMG! Our spider is 99% in failure mode. However, also found that nearly all makers (except tru Euro brands like Miele, Bosch, and Asko) are all suffering early drum spider failure with massive corrosion. As engineer, based on pics posted it is GALVANIC corrosion 100%. No BS to me that some pH in the water this and that,,,,turning a cast aluminum alloy part into silvery white mush is exactly what a zinc annode on a a ship hull looks like before replacement...that is designed galvanic corrosion...should not be that way on a commercial washer. Off to go back to good ol top loader!

Same as previous comments, our Samsung VRT Steam is 5 years old, and gave the 3E error code, went to start by check vent and drain before moving it to look in back and the vent was full of rubber and little chunks of debris, tub won't spin now, sounds like same problem others had, Samsung has said not their problem. Hey my $2000.00 VRT caught on fire NEW
by: Anonymous

It was a blessing I was home, otherwise I probably wouldn't have one because we live in the country with few neighbors. Now I get enjoy the task of holding Samsung accountable. They wanted to send a tech out that I would have to pay $80.00 to tell me my VRT was not repairable. After a stern discussion about the fact that no washing machine should catch fire, let alone with my family at home, they agreed to cover the cost of the tech. Let's see how this goes.

We purchased a new samsung washing machine model WF8700LSW/XET, after only 5 years the drum shaft has desentagrated broken from all the three legs. It is a shame for the samsung company and besides I tried to buy a new spider shaft but till now I did'nt find one for my modell.
Now if I will be lucky I will try to do a home made one myself because for sure it lasts longer
For me these machines are rubbish and never in my life buy or recommend this to others
When I bought the cheapest machine, it lasted 10 years

Samsung VRT is no good! NEW
by: Anonymous

I purchased my VRT in 2011. I am a single guy and really don't have a lot of laundry. My washer has been sitting for a year now as it is unusable due to a broken spider bracket and therefore the drum can not turn. I have been toughing it out and going to the laundromat thinking that I was going to find time to take on this repair. When I finally came to terms with how much time it was going to take to make this major repair myself I have decided to kick this piece of crap to the curb and start over. Never again will I buy anything with the name Samsung on it.

Do not buy a Samsung washing machine unless you want a machine that will cost you more to repair than it is worth. Samsung uses faulty parts that disintegrate causing other parts to break - expensive parts that are not covered under even their extended warrantees.

I thought that I was going crazy after cleaning the hose drain of chunks of metal and rock type pieces after every 3 loads. Now that I see the other comments it makes sense.....corroded arm!! I called Samsung customer care and they claim that they have never heard of this issue. Never again will I buy a Samsung!! My new Maytag top loader arrives tomorrow as I kick this Samsung to the curb.

Samsung VRTs SUCK NEW
by: T Bob

Oh I know, It's our fault. We overloaded the machine or used too much detergent. Except we didn't. We have had our VRT Washer for 5 years and we have been very diligent in caring for it. Cleaning the filter weekly and running the sanitize cycle regularly. We loaded our unit as instructed and never used anything other than HE detergent, and always slightly less than the amount suggested.

And yet the spider support that holds the drum stable disintegrated. Found really nasty chunks of metal in the filter and the tube leading to it after the unit started spinning more noisily than previously. Took the pieces out and showed them to a repair person. He confirmed that they were the sure signs of a broken spider support. Over $500 to repair.

No thank you. Google Samsung Spider Strut or Samsung Spider Support Issues before you buy one. Wish I had.

Samsung or Sam-suck? NEW
by: Anonymous

Paid $900 six years ago for Samsung model WF328 "top of the line" front loader with SilverCare plus 5 year warranty which of course expired months before the first service visit. This days after I had cleaned debris from the pump after watching a YouTube video on how to clear the "nd" code. The repairman couldn't identify the material which I thought it was something from inside the machine. Four weeks later and another $150 visit he found more of the same in the hose into the pump. I pieced the debris together and realized is was an alloy shaped like part of a housing or bracket but was oxidized and disintegrating. Two months later and I'm waiting for another service visit but realize now the machine is coming apart. And I hear a loud screeching sound during spin: bearings shot? Samsung self service support useless. Six years seems a bit short on the product lifecycle. I'm buying a Whirlpool tomorrow. Don't waste time and money on Samsung...SilverCare? NeverCare.

Won't buy Samsung Washer Ever Again NEW
by: Anonymous

I purchased my Samsung front loading washing machine model WF338 in May 2009. It is October 2015, just over 6 years later, and the machine is broken for the second time. For over 2 weeks I noticed the machine getting louder and louder when in spin cycle and then when I remove the clothes they are still wet. I called a repair person who charged $50 just to look at it. He said it needed a part to stabilize it but never came back after I called him twice. The drain clean out was full of debris; rocks, black sandy pieces and broken plastic bits. I called another repair person and they told me to just get rid of it because the cost to repair it was as much as buying a new machine. So after only 6 years, one year out of warranty, and having paid about $1,000 for it in 2009, I am replacing it. I will never buy another Samsung washing machine ever. Such a big waste of money and time trying to fix it.

Have to give Samsung and Lowe's credit for such a remarkable sales job. Like so many other customers, I believed I was buying the best (correspondingly, paying the most), only to later discover their products are absolute JUNK. No sense in going into detail as the facts surrounding these poorly designed and engineered appliances are all over the Internet. But worst of all, neither Samsung nor Lowe's will do the right thing for the customer even though they are fully aware of the product inferiority.

Samsung washer and driers both stink NEW
by: John

We purchased a brand new Samsung steam washer and dryer in January 2011.One month ago the dryer started making a clunking noise. After taking the dryer half apart I noticed where the fused joined of the drum is was cracked two inches. When I called Sears to ask about this problem they said nothing could be done other than orderiing a new $300.00 dollar drum at my expense. As usual It is backorder d for up to two months. The material used for this drum is far too light for a dryer drum.
Now for the washer. It just stinks!Smells like a combination of sewer gas and rotten socks even when leaving door open.
Stay away from either one of these inferior products unless you like issues.

Do It Yourself! Worth fixing DIY!! NEW
by: Anonymous

I purchased a used Samsung front load washing machine from a lady on Craigslist. I paid only $100 because she said that it "makes a loud noise and doesn't spin". I am a nurse, not a mechanic/technician,or whatever I would call the guy who could possibly fix it...but I am stubborn. I watched a few YouTube tutorials and learned how to disassemble the machine as well as some basic terminology. After spending $30 on a metric socket wrench set, I was able to easily do it myself. The first thing I noticed were that the inner and outer ball bearings destroyed. Then I noticed what looked like crumbled sea shells, pebbles, or cement in the drain hose line, which I found out was actually pieces of the broken support arm. Oh, sh*t! Back to the internet. Ordered ball bearings and rubber seal on amazon for $20! I called Samsung about the spider support arm and was given a contact number for a parts supplier. That part was $100 but was extremely easy to replace. A few screws to remove the old one and I had the new one on in minutes! Keep in mind that I have never even thought about how to fix a washing machine! So, $250, and about 2 hour work. I have a quiet, excellent machine that I love (and I kind of impressed my boyfriend too).

Metal Chunks/Rocks in hose NEW
by: APerry

First was the smell issue. Got that resolved, have to leave door open which blocks entry to garage that leads from laundry room. Then not draining and rubber bits in clothes. Had to have door liner replaced. Next ND error. Took back off, water pours out and found multiple larger and larger chunks of rocks or some form of metallic debris. Thought we had it sorted because it finally went through a wash. Now we don't get ND error but all laundry stays wet and water is still in tub at end of ANY wash cycle. Also machine walks all across laundry room, no matter how we level it. It knocks things down and I am so disgusted I could find every Samsung item in my home and ship them all back! Never again!! NEVER AGAIN! Samsung is no help as they conveniently "no longer sell or support this model but have a newer one that addresses these issues." If you have addressed the issues, doesn't that mean you were AWARE OF THE ISSUES??? RIP OFF!

This washer had excellent reviews when I bought, but my main complaint on the washer is that there is now drain catch so when wife leaves change or pens in laundry, it gets jammed into the pump and blows code. Annoying thing is I have to tear apart the back and pull the pump out each time this occurs. Get a washer with a drain catch. Over all we bought it in 2009 and havn't had any real issues. You just need to make sure everything is level. Oh and for the smell part just about every front loader has those issues so what I do is add vinegar to the laundry load every time and leave door open when not in use. This resolved odor issue. As for he Gas Dryer everything works well except when the wife forgets the trap and underwear blocks the exhaust tube. LOL :-) 11 years still can't fix stupid.

I`m glad I found this site. I can now be sure that I can have this machine hauled away and recycled this week. Bottom line...this machine is 6 years old and a metal part from the tub has crumbled into chunks and dust and has perforated bottom of the plastic tub. Now the tub is broken and leaks, the water pump is broken and the piece of decaying mystery metal from the tub is broken. Everyone with this issue, please join me in e-mailing Samsung to complain so that the issue gets fixed. Of course, it`s not worth fixing the machine because is doesn`t make economical sense. I hope that most of the parts actually get recycled. I wish I had studied engineering. I would love to build things to last!!! Needless to say, I will be switching to another brand.

Hunks of plastic and metal are coming off NEW

I got this when I bought my house 7 years ago when it was one of the newest/nicest ones available. I have noticed a smell, but that didn't bother me as much as all of a sudden the tub/basin is somehow out of alignment and it's making a terrible noise. I've tried to look for ways to repair it because it's sending hunks of plastic and metal not only into my clothes, but they're clogging my drain lines and pumps and my plumbing now. I've cleared out my pump and the lines to make it work for now because I don't have the money lying around to get a new one just yet and now I see why it was doing that. I really thought I would go with Samsung with my next pair but I'm thinking not. What a piece of junk.

We fixed that but then our samsung wouldnt drain! Code nf so we tried to find the part but for some odd reason no company will touch a samsung?! We called samsung and ordered the drain pump and we finally washed a load!!
Yay right? Nope! 2nd cycle the washer was shaking so bad it sounded as if things were falling off the wall in our basement only for me 2 go down there and see that not only is something wrong with the drum balance but....it tore the plastic boot or gasket that prevents water coming out due to the profuse shaking! Then...yes error code e3

Hole in drain from mystery chunk of metal??? NEW
by: Anonymous

So the other day we were doing laundry and noticed water leaking all over the floor. Did some investigating and found that a chunk of metal had broken off something, lodged itself in the drain and poked a hole in the side of it. So we now basically have a two year old POS washer that is defunct unless I want to spend 500 bucks to fix it. This is the second samsung washer we've had grenade in the last five years. Thank samsung, we're done with you.

Rubber seal half gone! NEW
by: Anonymous

I have had this washer for 2 years. It's a bit noisy but otherwise okay. But today I did 3 loads and found countless pieces of rubber mixed in the clothes after the 3rd load. I noticed that the rubber seal around the door had disintegrated in several places, even though it had shown no wear during the 2 previous loads I did on the same day. Hopefully my extended warranty will help but I won't hold my breath.

Wish I'd checked this garbage out!! NEW
by: Anonymous

All my girlfriends were jealous when they saw my Samsung VRT Silver Care washer and dryer on pedestals. My husband worked at Lowe's and bought "top of the line" or so we thought.

The shortest wash cycle is QUICK WASH which takes over an hour. Our clothes have deteriorated much more quickly than in old top loaders. Don't even think about using the silver care cycle. It's 2 hours long and I saw no difference. The washer weaved and bobbed and turned over 45 degrees toward the walk and I have to turn it back around to get my clothes out. It walks when spinning. That happened right off the bat. My husband leveled it but it still makes godawful noise as the drum slams back and forth.

But that is minor.

Then came the STINK!! And I researched and we started wiping down the gasket, left door wide open and soap tray open every time. Every week I ran a very hot bleach load. This B of a machine is HIGH maintenance.

Then 2 years into it, it would "wash" and then start beeping NF every load, so I go manually move it to Rinse and Spin. I can't leave a load and run errands, it won't finish a cycle. OK I'll deal with that, the moldy smell and the walking washing machine problems. The barrel never seemed to empty all the water-that's why we got such a bad smell many times. Hubby said drain was very low-no reason it shouldn't drain, but it didn't!

So I was doing a load and had turned it to Rinse and Spin, it was spinning when all of a sudden, it made really loud noises, slamming and banging. I ran and turned it off.It would not turn at all after that.

I dreade telling hubby. He pulled out the machine and checked for belts!! SIlly us-it's all electronic.

Eventually after much cussing and 6 soaking towels I cannot wash he called me over and handed me a piece of metal that was corroded and looked like an old arrowhead...this was in the drain which is 3 inches at the machine and narrows down to an inch. We didn't know how metal could get there but thought we found the problem. NOPE there were still 2 much larger pieces in the drain, masnufactured. We thought it might be the silver piece for sanitizing, but now we think it is a piece that holds our drum to the back.

We live on disability now and I'd give my right arm for my old top load,it was corroded by our sea air but ran like a champ and I am stuck with this garbage.

If any one starts a class action, count me in.
I don't know if the technology is any better now, but I'm going back to the old school washing machine.

Samsung you suck. Our appliances should be builrt here anyway...bring manufacturing jobs back to the USA!!!!!

STOP USING CHEMICAL DETERGENTS AND FABRIC SOFTNERS... NEW
by: Anonymous

I Agree with the comments below.... Clean your machines (front loaders monthly) leave the door open if no small children live in the house... And stop using fabric softeners and chemical detergents.... You will never have a musky smell or build-up again... Also always use powder detergents because they rinse away easier and don't stick to the washer seals and cause build -up... To the people who think you shouldn't have to clean your washer.. You do ...and should even clean top loaders as well.... Whatever brand of machine you choose know that there is away to avoid mold and stinky clothes...I hope this helps ... Just remember you don't need bleach or Afresh tablets... Vinegar , baking soda, and a toothbrush.... DON'T USE VINEGAR AND BAKING SODA TOGETHER OBVIOUSLY .... Cheap natural solution that works... Happy washing ;-)

Slow down you're walking too fast NEW
by: Walking to New Orleans

We have had this washer 11 months. At first wonderful. After about 7 months it started taking off till the hoses are tight.

We have checked level and ours is. I'd guess there is a problem with the ball bearings that set the balance of the drum.

It gets our clothes much cleaner than the old top loader.

We wipe it down inside and out after each use. We also use a plastic cup to keep the door open all the time. Haven't had any stink so far.

If it would only stay put we would be happy.

Washer fan controls mold, mildew and smell NEW
by: Boss Hoss

There is a fan you can install on the back of your washer that helps prevent mold, mildew and the resulting smells. I found this while searching for a solution to the mold/mildew problem.

Go to www.washerfan.com for information and videos of how it works. Also there are many reviews by customers who say it has solved their mold problems. It works by drying out the inside of the washer so no mold can form. It's about $70 but if it solves the problem it will be worth it.

I to have had odor problems with my Samsung front load washer. My front load washer and dryer were purchased in 2008. I tried vinegar, bleach and finally dish washer powder which seems to have helped. A lot of upkeep for such an expensive appliance. I have never used the silver care cycle and thought it might make a difference with the odor.
My question is having never used the cycle before, my display reads LUO which indicates 1000 cycles have been used. I don't understand how this could be. Is there some activation I need to perform before using the silvercare cycle? Why would it read the code for 1000 cycles when I have never used it. After the 1000 cycles a new kit needs to be installed. Does the silver run out even though the cycle was never used.
If anyone can give me some advice, I would appreciate it.
Thanks

I've had this machine for four years. I LOVE it--no musty odor, no mold, etc. Just very clean, fresh smelling clothes! Don't know if it makes a difference, but I've only ever used powder soap, I wipe the drum and seal regularly, and run an Affresh tablet once a month. We even have very hard water here in So. Cal. Worst Money Ever Spent
by: Andrea

The samsung vrt front load washer is indeed a horrible machine.

Like most of the posters on here I've had the mouldy smell. I fixed it by leaving the door open but then of course the PLASTIC door hinge broke and I had to replace that.

The mouldy smell can be avoided by doing laundry every day. No more laundray DAY on the weekend for me, every day must be laundry day thanks to this crappy washer.

I just fixed the door hinge a few days ago and the locking mechanism doesn't work now. I've had problems with it since the beginning, sometimes the door just won't lock. NO reason.

I"m going back to a top load machine with knobs!!!! This thing is a piece of garbage and not built to last. I"m not even sure it even cleans my clothes very well. I have noticed some things coming out with wholes in them though. And the rust that someone else mentioned.

You suck Samsung, never again!

Have called them & they seem to not care at all that this could of caught our house on fire & killed someone. I am furious!!!!!! Now we are out a washer & all the clothes that were in the washer at the time & could of died if i didn't have the fire alarm!

easy remedy to mold smell
by: Allie

ALL front load washers will get the "moldy" smell. it is from a build up on the outside of the drum... they make cleaners for it but an easier fix than buying a cleaner is use powder laundry soap instead of liquid! it doesn't leave the "soap scum" on the outside of the drum. you still need to clean the despinser from time to time but the alge buildup in there isn't as bad either.
We use Arm and Hammer powder soap... I have had allergies to powder soap when used in a top load washer but haven't had any problems with my allergies with this washer.

gets clothes clean... when it works
by: mom of 4

I've had mine for 4 years and it washes the clothes very well... when it's functional, which is rare. I'm on my 5th major repair. This is the 3rd time the drain pump has failed. Yes, I keep the pump filter clean and don't wash small items that can clog the lines. The drain pumps are just total garbage. Another of my major repairs was when the door glass completely shattered while washing a load of sheets on warm. The 5th repair was when the piece of metal that holds the door gasket in place popped loose and released the door gasket into the tub with my clothes. The spinning of the tub caused the gasket to wrap up around my clothes and ruin them as well. I don't know if we just got a lemon, if it was somehow dropped in transit, or what, but this thing has been nothing but trouble. Basically I paid a thousand clams for the privilege of washing my clothes at the laundromat all the time. Like I said, if it works, it works great. Just don't count on it.

Samsung Front load VRT
by: Bill M

Samsung front load VRT is garbage. Do not buy and if you have one, attempt to buy and extended warranty. The rear spider arm(s) will corrode and break throwing the inner tub out of alignment which leads to outer tub wear, bearing failure & door seal wear. It's an $800 fix and Samsung will not cover unless within 1 year or you have an extended warranty. My wife & I are in our 50's and even the repair tech for Lifetime Repair said the machine looks brand new. Well it received little use compared to when we were raising our family but it was JUST 3 years old. Our prior washers each lasted over 12 years w/o a problem. I find this unacceptable but Samsung couldn't even borther to have a supervisor call me back. Save yourself a lot of aggravation but buy from a different manufacturer. Good luck.

by: John in torrance

I liked this washer for about two months. I've had it for about 4 years now. I agree with the posters that yes there is a smell, but not always. Or maybe my wife and i are not that sensitive. From nearly the begining we always felt like the washer never really WASHED the clothes. Just got them wet and the spun them dry. I've never had a washer that didn't seem to wash. So now recently it stops about halfway through the cycle and the clothes are all wet and soapy with quite a bit of water still in the washing cyclinder. I've read many posts on how to resolve this and nothing has helped. For such an expensive washer, it really sucks. Please don't buy anything made by Samsung. I don't think I've ever owned anything I liked made by Samsung.

Moldy smell. SWITCH TO POWDER
by: Appliance Queen

CAROLYN: You are sooooo right. Thank you. I didn't think it could be that simple. I don't do a lot of laundry so mine took a little longer to clean out residue.(2 Months) I just now opened the door and NO Smell. HOLY COW! Yipee! SWITCH TO POWDER!

Also, check your door like I said below. Once I cleaned it out and sealed it tighter it never leaked again.

Since I am now past this moldy smell, I can now say once again, I love this machine. My husband had an important meeting and could not find his favorite suit which was still squished in his travel bag from the last trip. He was so dissapointed and needed to leave in 20 mins. I threw it in the dryer on the refresh cycle then pressed the pants seams. He was out the door on time looking great. I feel like I'm a commercial. lol.

Not happy with this washer!!!!!
by: Anonymous

I purchased the Samsung Silver care model with matching dryer for my new house. Was so happy with the gray color. But I have always had the mold smell since day one.
Those cleaning products in the stores are nothing more than bleach and I used the Tide brand and now smell chlorine and mold. I read that the bleach harms the medal parts in the washer so I stopped using them. I have always left the door opened and the soap dispenser tray open and it only knocks the odor down a smidge.
You can really smell the odor after taking a shower and getting the towel wet, give it a sniff.
Terrible!! I threw out all my colored towels and got all new white ones thinking it was the dyes but that was not the case. I use the HE liquids and found that if I use a little more than recommended, and do small loads, no more than 4 towels, it helps a little. I know the experts says to use less, about 2 tablespoons but this works for me.

Mold does grow in the tray area on the top of the washer. I take it our at least once a month and clean the scrub the inside with a old toothbrush and cleaner.
I have had it with this washer and would NOT recommend this front loader to anyone! When this one breaks it will be replaced with a top loader, a cheap one!! Not another HE either. How does the rinsing cycles 3 or 4 times per load after the one wash cycle save any water more than a top loading machine?

oooh the SMELL
by: Aja

just finished the family meeting and I said I was going online to see what reviews say about this mold smell.. I'm glad I'm not alone (misery loves company:)
the conversation started with me taking the towel off my head and the smell almost knocked me out... then my brother joined in and said he's been smelling his clothes for days and realized it's not him its the clothes... we put two and two together and realized this washer is slowly KILLING US... my brother is about to have a allergy test because of all the rashes he's been getting... hmmmm?! I've had a rash on my left arm for a month now that's not going away and is looking very suspect...some other personal health concerns have come to surface recently and now im starting to think its because of the mold/mildew... I too will be heading over to the doctor to find out if the mold has anything to do with it.. if it does... SAMSUNG HERE COMES A LAWSUIT!!!
this isn't the first FL washer we've owned... it's sad to have to leave the door open with the risk of family pets getting in or small kids.. but OK if this is what we have to do then fine... however pulling the washer appart to clean tubes and stuff is a HECK NO! we will also not be buying any fresheners because if this is a on going issue with FL then the fresheners should be supplied free of charge... tomorrow I will be calling the place we purchased it from and kindly ask them to take this piece of crap out of my house and burn it.
dissapointed and literally sick from this washer

Answer to sour, mildew problem
by: Carolyn

ANSWER TO THE SOUR, MILDEW ODOR....This happens with all HE machines. I have a Whirlpool Cabrio top load washer. Also had the same problem. Switched from liquid laundry detergent to HE powder, have not had an odor problem since. Give it a good 3 weeks. No kidding, my clothes smell fresh, the washer smells fresh. Towels that have been in closet for days kept that fresh smell.
The liquid is thick and sticks to outside of drum. After time it builds up. There is not enough water pressure with these machines to do the job. Before switching I even took the screen out of the connection hose for more pressure but that didn't work.
It's worth the try even if you just bought a liquid. Buy the smallest box at first to make sure it's working for you. Make sure it's HE.

OUR MACHINE WORKS GREAT AND HAS NO VIBRATION COMPARED TO THE BOSCH WE HAD. You must leave the door open a crack to avoid the odor. Front loaders all have little airflow compared to top loaders so will get musty and don't leave wet clothes in the washer.

Orange spots on clothes
by: Bruce

We have had the Samsung front loader for 7 years. WE have never had a moldy smell issue. Our issue is lack of cleaning and small orange spots on the clothes. With years of elimination and countless conversations with Samsung, I believe I have finally figured out the cause. It is only noticed on light coloured clothes. It is only noticed when the load is left in the washer for a extended time. And there is a coin like rattle coming from the drum. I believe that the orange spots are rust from some metal under the drum. Now I am trying to figure out how to rid our machine of this.

I have had my Samsung FL for 2 years now, never had a problem, a few weeks ago I opened the door to do laundry and the smell was horrible, I have also noticed an underlying odor in all of our clothes and towels, I have tried the tide washing machine cleaner, afresh, vinegar, bleach... Nothing was working... I cleaned the trays, emptied the filter, wiped the gasket... That helped a tiny bit... Now I am using powder detergent, and Borax.. And I think I am actually getting somewhere! I dumped the Borax right into the drum and mixed some with my detergent and then washed my towels on the sanitize cycle... They smell so much better and are softer than they have been in a long time even when I used frabric softener! Now at least I am the only one who still smells a faint smell.. ( my husband thinks I'm crazy!) but it seems to be working!

Really does smell horrible
by: Anonymous

Am at my wits end on this machine.

I had an LG front-loader and never had a single smell, but we had to leave it with our last house.

I have tried everything they recommend to get rid of the stink, as well as:
-purchasing the wash crystals to give fragrance
-purchasing downy
-purchasing lots and lots of plug in air wicks to keep the laundry room from stinking
-purchasing lots of dryer sheets

And i've also flooded my laundry room when a friend ran a load when I had the filter open to air it out down there - and my friend didn't notice.

Do we have any recourse here?

stinky clothes possible remedy
by: Anonymous

Just wanted to give some info to the people who are having stinky clothes issues: I too have a HE machine and I hate it, but I just can't bring myself to fork out hundreds of dollars for another machine right now, but soon. My solution for my clothes that still have Body odor in them is: I soak them with Oxyclean in a tub of very hot water and I let them soak for a few hours. Yes it is inconvenient but it works and I don't know what else to do. So just wanted to pass the info on. And if I don't have time for a soak I have lightly sprayed 409 on the armpits to kill the bacteria and used an extra rinse cycle to get all the 409 out. Hope this helps some one.

LOVE IT!

I have no idea what these other reviews are talking about, I have had my Samsung front loader washer and drier for 2.5 years.
I have never ...closed the door, left the tray open..or wipe the rubber seal!
I do not have any smelly crap, no mold or Mildew.
My washer/drier works like a dream, I honestly have nothing bad to say about the pair!
I think it's a great buy

Keep up the great work Samsung

Smell, odor from mold under the rubber ring inside the machine - e-mail sent to Samsung
by: Anonymous

I would like to ask that Samsung initiate a recall to fix a hazardous flaw in the design of my washing machine that is causing potential health issues in my home. I live in a dry climate. My washer is perfectly level. We leave the door open at all times after each load. The washer has developed an musty, mildew odor that is the result of hazardous mold. Today I discovered the location of the mold - under the rubber lip of the large inside rubber seal nearest the basket, i.e. the main, large circular rubber seal that encircles the hole through which clothes are loaded and unloaded to and from the basket. Having discovered the problem, I will now attempt to clean this with bleach; but clearly there is a design flaw here with serious potential health effects. As well, the rubber seal itself does not appear to be removable, limiting the effectiveness of cleaning under and behind it with bleach. Consequently, I am asking for a permanent fix - perhaps a better seal, or else an easily removable rubber seal with instructions to remove it and clean/dry the space underneath between loads. This is a hazardous condition that needs to be remedied urgently please and thanks.

Stinky washing machine?
by: LllllAnonymous

My washing machine stinks! Called for repair. I was told they all stink. He was referring to front loading Samsung. why put dirty clothes in a machine that smells worst than garbage? it is also stupid to have to clean a washer after use and really stupid to leave it open. What about small children or pets? Samsung has the technolgy to do better for us .These machines are not cheap. sorry I bought one.

Done with Samsung!
by: Anonymous

Worst machine I ever owned. I loved it at first...I never close the door, run the silver cycle, use Borax in each load, run bleach rinse out after each load & it still stinks - BUT I discovered why... So poorly designed! Further, the filter is constantly plugged though I clean it weekly or more, don't dare wash dog or cat items.I'm desperate enough to even rinse soiled items before putting them in the machine. Cleaned it out - my husband had to turn it on the side to get into it from the back and was I shocked at the poor design for drainage! Its no wonder it gets plugged up and stinks! It was sooo hard to believe! We thought we were upgrading. Every month I have to spend hours with the %$# thing draining it(you'd be shocked to see what keeps draining after a wash, then after a rinse. My clothes hardly are soiled - I work in an office - they smell AFTER washing! I MISS OUR old top loading Maytag. I've had this Samsung for about 4 years of hell now - only because I'm so stubborn and hate to put out the money yet again. I drained the darned thing all day today to get one load done. Finally I'm DONE with Samsung!

For those who experience mold issues
by: Anonymous

There is no reason anyone who has a front loader should experience any mold or mildew issues if you know how to take care of your washer. First step is NEVER leave the door shut after doing a load of laundry. Think about it. You have left over moisture from doing a load and you shut the door. Where does that moisture have to go? No where. Its no different from a bathroom where someone shuts the door after taking a hot shower and doesnt have an air vent. It will cause mold/mildew. Allow it to dry then leave the door cracked.
Second leave the detergent tray open a bit to allow air in. Third wipe down the door and rubber gasket after each wash and peel back the gasket a bit and wipe any excess water. Finally make sure you dont use to much detergent and fabic softener. Using to much will cause left over residue. If you allow the machine to just breath and dont use to much detergent you shouldnt have a problem, ever. They also sell Affresh which helps clean the tub if you ever want to use it.

Front Loader odors
by: Anonymous

Purchased my Samsung WF328 in 09/2009 and just recently have noticed an odor. The washer is used at least twice/wk. I ran a full cycle using bleach and vinegar and that seemed to clear the odor problem. Also removed the soap dispenser and wiped off with bleach water. Mine does't have an accessible filter. Also, since owning it, we wipe the rubber gaskets off as well as the inside of the door after use and prop open the door with a folded towel about 6 inches to allow drying out. As others have posted, front loader doors, unlike top loaders, are sealed and need to be air-dried. If people would only realize that you can't always do things the same way as you did for 25yrs with the old stuff vs new stuff, then maybe fewer complaints and more satisfaction. We've have no complaints or problems with Samsung products whatever.

Horribly noisy & poorly designed
by: Anonymous

The Samsung front loader I purchased 12/11 is horrible. The machine rattles so loudly during any spin, it sounds like it is about to fall apart or fly across the room & can be heard on the other side of the house. This is despite the fact the machine was leveled perfectly at install. The cycle selection knobs on the washer& dryer are a ridiculous design; the cycle goes back to the previous usage settings even after you turn the knob. If you accidentally hit the power button before you start a new cycle, you lose all your new settings.
And the automatic sensor dryer settings don't even allow for medium low heat.

NOT all user error
by: Anonymous

I am really tired of folks who say these problems are all user error. They must be employed by the folks who make and sell these products...LOL. I have a Kenmore front loader - came here to see if the Samsung was better - evidently not. I have ALWAYS used HE detergent in it -and I use powder which rinses cleaner. In 6 years, I may have used fabric softener 10 times. AND I ALWAYS leave the door wide open - not just a little. I also run hot water bleach cycles (with no clothes) fairly frequently. Yet, the gasket is black with mold - that's even with me washing it with bleach fairly frequently. The problem with these machines is that there are lots of places for water to gather - it doesn't drain as efficiently as top loaders. But I do like that I can add more clothes, that they come out less wet which means less time in the dryer . But, I just don't think washing your clothes in mold is healthy! Plus, if the expected life span of a washer these days is 6-8 years (per salesman) why would I buy a $1000 machine?

The smell is in the Door.
by: Appliance Queen

Anonymous! I understand your frustration, but read down to my posting. It's in the door. Once I cleaned it out, I haven't had a problem since. My model has the steam option in it. Once I realized the steam has to build up to work, I realized they had to reduce the venting to make it work. And to the other poster, don't tell people not to leave the door open. I am glad you don't have a problem, and prob live in a dry environment. I use washing soda, which is stronger then baking soda and it happened to me. SO, clean out the door then after your load leave the door open. Now that I overcame the smell, I love this machine. It took me a little while to figure out the setting, and once I did all I can say is WOW! I no longer have to pre-treat my husbands cloths, unless it's really stained up (deep steam). I did notice my cloths were getting more wrinkled, so I now reduce the speed of the spin cycle, and it has made a difference. Love LOVE this machine.

No help from Lowes or Samsung!!
by: Anonymous

My wife and I purchased a set of the Silver Care Samsung Steam washer and dryer about a year and a half ago and have had mildew smelling clothes for the last year. We have contacted Lowes numerous times with no help what so ever. In fact they have given us the worst customer service imaginable. All we continue to get is, "sorry this is a common problem, just leave the door open and use these tablets to clean the machine"! I now have to spend an additional seven dollars a month (84 a year) just to keep the smell out of a 1500 dollar washing machine. By the way, the following recommendations don't work at all and are just ideas to make you believe the problem will go away:
1. Clean the gasket around the door
2. Use the sanitize cycle, it increases the temperature and kills the bacteria.
3. Cycle a load of bleach or vinegar.
4. Use HE washing machine tablets to clean the machine once a month.
5. Leave the door open.
I can guarantee this machine will let you down. In fact Lowes will also let you down. Don't get caught up in their displays and their false service guarantees. My wife and I previously owned Maytag Neptunes and wished we never got rid of them. Bottom line; DON'T BUY FROM LOWES OR PURCHASE ANY SAMSUNG PRODUCTS, YOU WILL BE LEFT FEELING UPSET, VIOLATED, AND POTENTIALLY IN DEBT!!!!!

No need to leave washer door open
by: Anonymous

We have had the washer/dryer set for over 5 years and have had no issues (even after we moved it to a new house) at all with them. There is no need to leave the washer door open if you use baking soda in your laundry. We use baking soda and not any bleach or peroxide or vinegar. We have not had any odor issues at all.

Major design flaw Samsung front loader
by: Robert Bos

A few nights ago, at end of the spin cycle, there was a terrible bang, machine vibrated, and shut down. Next morning while starting another load there was water all over the floor. Took back off machine, noticed a puncture in rear portion of tub, in well, at drain hose connection. Only thing that could cause this is something hit it at high speed and with great force from the inside. Took drain hose off and large chunks of stuff fell out of tub, some pieces rather large, lager than a toonie (canadian $2 coin). They were heavy, almost felt like stone or some strange composition, couldn't figure how those pieces got in there! Upon further investigation however, realized they must have come from inside the machine, so took it completely apart!

Wow, what a mess! There is a piece attached to the rear of the stainless steel drum, shaped like 3 spokes, which also has the shaft for the electric motor as part of it, it fits into the recess of the tub shaped the same way. This part was partially disintegrated, chunks missing, one arm cracked completely through, completely coated in a thick crap that looked like soap residue, and for the life of me, don't know how soap residue would stick there, when centrifical force should throw it to the outer tub, then to the drain. Even the rear of the tub was packed full of this residue which we dug out with a screwdriver, washed everything with water to clean it.

Found out that part is only available as part of the drum assembly so I guess its a new drum.

I can repair the hole in the tub with epoxy but wondering if I should even spend a couple hundred dollars on the new drum if this is just going to happen again.

This machine is only 3 years old, has always had a slight funny odor, even when all precautions are taken, but nothing that you couldn't live with. However, for all you other owners just be prepared, before 4 yrs are up it will likely come apart on you. This machine was put in service May 2008!

Like I said, a major design flaw!!

Wouldn't recommend this machine, in fact would buy a top loader next time for sure, our first top loader lasted 20 years, going through 3 babies with cloth diapers, my grubby work clothes, at least 6 loads per week for 20 yrs! 1 timer, 1 pump, 2 hoses, thats it for repairs!

Need I say more!

Not happy with this washer
by: Anonymous

I have the mold smell too and have been looking online for what is causing the problem and how to solve it. I have not been leaving the washer door open, but will now. I should not have to. This is definitely a defect in the product since it should drain properly like my old top loader did...There was no maintenance needed with that machine. This high efficiency machine is just high maintenance and who needs that???

We should use the law to get it recalled
by: LawProtection

If a model of cars has hazardous issue, the car maker is responsible for it. The smell from Samsung machine is a heath issue. I cannot take it any more, I spend a whole morning to clean it using bleach. The smell is still there. It is a health hazardous pollution in our home where we spent most of the time. The smell comes out of the laundry room will pollute our whole indoor air. This is a issue US government should handle to let the manufacture to recall its faulty product.

I will test the nature of the smell (What kind of toxins in the smell air) to see if legal action is needed to force the manufacture to recall their faulty product. It could be very serious health hazard for children and people having asthma or other allergic problems.

If you have this machine, you can email me your problem and I will let you know the progress on "Forcing Samsung to Recall Its VRT Silver Care Front Loading Washing Machine. You can also pass this message to other who have it. My email is kongxiausa@gmail.com

US Government should protect our citizen from serious indoor hazardous source.

I think I found problem.
by: Appliance Queen

Eureka! I believe I found the problem. I love appliances, and bought the Samsung front loaders. I also have that horrible smell, saw this website and was bound and determined to figure it out. I always use vinegar in my wash due to my very hard water, so I new there wasn't a build up. I like to use peroxide (wear gloves) to clean the machine where I can reach. I sprayed the gaskets, hmm there was some build up, but I can't image this was making the smell. I then sprayed the swing door around where the glass meets the plastic and noticed that the DOOR was dripping brown. WHATTTT! I realized that the door was easy to disassemble, so I removed the screws, pulled the glass insert which allowed the door to come apart. Then suddenly black mold poured out with the peroxide from between the layers onto the floor. Allot! And PEEU did it stink. There is no gasket, nothing to stop the water from seeping into the seams. Ugggh! I then removed the door from the hinges, brought it to the sink and scrubbed and bleached the pieces. I AM NOT RECOMMENDING YOU DO THIS!! I personally had no problem. However if you are under warrantee, call for maintenance servicing. Then where they get there, insisted they take the door apart.

Yes we are not used to front loader washers, and we must MUST takes steps accordingly. These machines leave allot of water behind everywhere. 1. Leave the front door open to dry. 24 hours is NOT enough. (this will also help the door to dry out). 2. Leave the soap dispenser compartment open to dry.(pull it and you will see so much water left behind). 3. Clean out the bottom filter often. (approx 3 oz. water came pouring out, use towel) 4. Wipe down the rubber gaskets often with vinegar or peroxide. 5. Clean washer often with a combo of bleach and vinegar on the hottest setting. I personally will start using a quick rinse and spin cycle before washing if my machine has sat there for a long period of time unused.

I hope this takes care of it. If not, I shall return!!! lol

Mildew!
by: Laurie

I had a Maytag Neptune front loader set for 8 years before "upgrading" to the Samsung set. I have now had the machines for about 16 months and wish I'd kept my Maytag set. In 8 years, I never once had an issue with any smells from my machine. I did not have to leave the door open or clean it with anything to "hide" odors. Samsung needs to stick to what they know and it's NOT washing machines. I am so disappointed with them and they cost a fortune! I used to believe that you got what you paid for but that is not the case with this washing machine. I was better off with my less expensive set. DON'T BUY THIS MACHINE IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY!!! If you don't have a mildew smell yet.....just wait, you will. I live in Alaska where heat and humidity is not an issue so don't let anyone tell you that the problem is where you live!

Bad mold problems
by: Tuebor

I've owned this model for 18 months. I wasn't very impressed with it in the first place; it didn't seem to do any better than my 30-year-old top loader, at least not enough to deserve all the praise it gets. I'm sure it's more energy efficient but how would I know?

Meanwhile, the rubber lining around the door and tumbler has developed a terrible mold growth. I thought they would have used a mold-resistant material for this. Who knows what's growing in areas that can't be viewed? I noticed the interior would always be wet after doing a load but I assumed this would be accounted for in the design. To have to leave the door open after every wash as a solution to the problem seems ridiculous; so does using bleach every other load. Samsung needs to issue a recall and develope a new liner material or install a heating element that dries the interior.

I got our Samsung May of 2010. I was so excited to get a stacking washer and dryer combo. I noticed right away the mildew smell in my towels and wash cloths. I was told from the start to keep the doors open. So they were never shut. I was told to use a little bleach and water combo with every load. What a shame to even have to. I am counting down the days until my husband lets me get rid of the piece of junk! I can understand the reason my cloths never look clean, there is about -1 inch in the bottom of the machine! How is it suppose do a good job. If you want to sanitize or use the silver care..your looking at @ 1 hour every load(just washing). I miss the old top loader I threw out! I want it back! I want the agitator and clean fresh smelling cloths back!

Wow.. Is this washer really as bad as they say?
by: Anonymous

I bought the washer along with the dryer as a set. So far we have had it a little over a year and my wife couldn't be happier with them. The only real complaint I have with it is cleaning the filter. Seems I get water everywhere but having a towel there that's taken care of pretty fast. I have never had a problem with the moldy smell or any other problems listed. The VRT works great as far as I am concerned. We live in a mobile home and the older washer we had would shake the trailer badly. This one shakes a very little in the beginning of the spin cycle until it evens out and when its winding down, but nothing compared to our old front load. Most of the time we don't notice it, unless like tonight the reason I found this was we got a DC error, which is from an unbalanced load. But that came from my wife shoving a twin comforter, a king size fuzzy blanket and 2 pillow pets in one load. It just couldn't level. First and only error we have ever had and was easily remedied by pulling the twin comforter out. I would definitely recommend this washer to friends and personally would buy another one when the time comes. Hope some one finds this helpful...

Most problems are user error
by: Anonymous

This is a high efficiency front loader not an old top loader. STOP using regular detergent in it. And knock it off with the 2 bottles of fabric softener a week. That is like pouring gas on a fire and can't figuring out why the fire got worse. Dumping all this non HE detergent in the washer makes it worse. Everyone is used to putting in lots of detergent like on a top loader and it is not necessary. They work differently. leave the door open until it dries out. It is sealed and no moisture can escape when it is closed. It worked the same way on a top loader because even though it was closed it wasn't sealed so the moisture could escape. It is a different way to wash clothes and everyone I know that used to complain about it has now figured it out and doesn't have a problem. This is all user error and to fix the problem you are pouring in more detergent and fabric softener which makes it worse. Only use HE and you don't need a bunch of suds to clean clothes. Front load user who has never had smelly clothes or mold. My WF448 washes clothes well and they feel much better out of the wash and my clothes smell better as well. I still only give it 4 stars because of the long wash cycles which I don't care for and some times it takes a while to balance itself. It does hold much more clothing than my old kitchen-aid washer which balances out the long wash times with fewer loads. The machine is on a 2nd floor next bedrooms and it vibrates much less that the old kitchen-aid set which I gave to my younger brother and is still in use.

I have had this eighteen months and it works just fine. Once I left clothes in for two days and it really stunk but I re- ran the load with vinegar and it was fine. Thats the only time it smelled. I don't even clean it out. I leave the door closed but unlatched. I got to this page looking for info on cleaning the filter which I've never done but they suggest every two months. It was a surprise to open it and have water pour out. Including instructions in the chamber would have been nice. At least the water was clean and unsmelly. I use Charlie's Soap.

Worst mistake I have EVER made!!!!! I am a mom of three with lots of laundry! This washing machine not only does not get my clothes clean, it causes my knits to get knit balls (piling) and has destroyed my clothes!!! This is in addition to the nasty mildew smelling towels that I get to dry off with after taking a shower:(((( I have owned this machine for 18 months and followed all recommendations from the manufacturer. The door is constantly left open! That does not solve the problem! We have ran bleach through this machine, used machine cleaner, afresh tablets, vinegar, etc. Still has that nasty mildew smell! I think this problem is across the board with all front loading washing machines! I think everyone who has purchased these should get a refund to buy a top loading machine. This machine got such good reviews and I researched this purchase more than anyone possibly could. I just wished that I had purchased a top loader. I understand that these are better for the environment but if I have to wash and rewash again and again then they aren't really are they? I would give anything to have my whirlpool top loader back that I had for 10 years! I know they are not as cool to look at but they do the job! In ten years I never had to clean my washing machine! My towels came out smelling fresh no matter how dirty they were. I just think that less water=less clean! These companies need to come out with an energy efficient product that actually does the job it is supposed to do! I am building a new home and I will not be
taking this machine with me! I am giving it away with this
house and I look forward to saying goodbye! Bottom line, DO NOT BUY a front loading washing machine!!!!!

Problems with my front load washer
by: Rick

Like everyone else here, I purchase the Samsung front load washer thinking I was going to save some money on electricity and water. My washer does not have the santizer level and I was unaware that I was about to have problems with the unit. My first clue was the smell that came from my laundry. I assumed the smell was coming from my gas dryer. Since my dryer was approximately 15 years old, I decided to replace it. Needless to say, the smell got worse even though I now had a new dryer. I became concerned when I noticed a reddish colored stain on the gray front seal. A few days later, my entire family came down with dermatitis as a result of the crud remaining on our clothing, towels and bedding. The itching and rash was intense and nothing helped relieve the discomfort. After days of running bleach, affresh, white vinegar, borax and now smelly washer.. I seemed to have remedied the problem. The washer smells fine and the clothes seem to be clean and fresh. I suffer from athsma and I now believe this may have triggered an attack in the middle of the night last summer that almost sent me to the ER. We live in southern California and I attributed the attack to change in humidity with our marine layer that moved in over night. This really has been a nightmare for my family, but Lowes has treated us well throughout offering to give me store credit toward a new washer. Like everyone else, I am now wiping the rubber seal down, leaving the door and detergent drawer open. I run bleach routinely, wash everything in hot water and use borax and white vinegar as a supplement. I'm hoping for the best.

For those with Mold Smell Problems...
by: Anonymous

I grew up in England, and have NEVER used anything other than a front loader machine (I am 39 years old). This is new technology to the US, but not to the rest of the world.
You must leave the door of your washer slightly ajar or you WILL have mold problems. They NEED to be aired out.
I leave mine wide open and also the leave the detergent drawer wide open. I am able to do this because they are in the basement and will not be in anyone's way. I also wipe the grey plastic rim dry after each use.
Also I only use 2 tsps max of HE detergent.
I am really pleased with this washer and the dryer. There has been a drastic drop in my water bill this quater. I have no issues with my clothes not comming out clean or still smelling. They come out bright and clean, love the silver technology!
As I said I grew up with these and they need some airing out or you will be going thru many machines and find the same problems with all front loaders.
There is no comparison between the antiquated top loaders and the front loading HE machines.
As my mother said when she came to visit and used a top loader "the clothes came out dirtier than when they went in", not to mention how bad the spining was on clothes.
I am super-duper happy with my purchase.

Mould disaster
by: Anonymous

My Samsung has been a great machine as far as washing and getting the clothes clean. If you have problems with noise or shaking your machine is not balanced properly. The only big problem I have is the mould smell which has been there for a year and got worse and worse. I am trying everything to get rid of the the smell, my house smells like dirty laundry, it's winter now and we keep the windows closed because it's too cold to open them and the smell disgusts me. Me like all the others was so excited to get these nice looking machines. Now what!!!

Great machine, super quiet
by: Dennis

Absolutely the quietest washer I have used. This is important since our laundry is upstairs. So far, no complaints. The closed door mildew issue can be a problem on any front load because the drum is sealed as opposed to a top load. A quick wash with clorine bleach or a "SilverCare" cycle once a week should help a lot (we leave the door open. The preset cycles have performed well and the high speed spin with towels extracts more water and shortens dryer time. We like the matching dryer too. The dryness sensor should save some electricity. So far, we are very happy with the set.

Rotting sushi smell
by: Anonymous

This washer is highly over rated. It does not clean that well for starters. The odor issue is the biggest problem. All the recommendations given to resolve this do not work because the poor design is the actual reason for it. I have worked directly with Japanese manufacturers and they always approuch problems with thier products by making excuses and then giving lame advice on how to deal with it. They would rather do this then admit in their pride that a product is flawed. They are willing to go around and around like this forever. Then when they make the next years version of the product they will fix the design. That means they acknowledge the problem but will not by no means admit it verbaly or in writing. They should have stayed out of this market. I give this product a big fat O rating.

My husband and kids complain!
by: Stacey S.

We remodeled our home and wanted to put in a more efficient machine in our second floor laundry room. I researched MANY models and went with the samsung. At that time, it had all positive reviews and the price was right. I have kids in sports and my husband likes to play outside. The first thing I noticed was that when you wash on NORMAL cycle the loads take over an hour and after drying the clothes I could still smell body odor on them, especially the underarms. So, then I tried pressing extra wash and rinse with each cycle. Still, the same problem. My friend told me to spray pre-cleaner on any spots and under the arms. Now, I treat almost all our clothes with pre-cleaner and run with extra-wash and rinse. The loads take forever, but it did help. (I use TIDE HE powder) The next problem we encountered and still have is the smell of mildew on clothes. This started after having the machine for about a year. I wiped the inside of the machine with clorox and thoroughly cleaned the trays and ran a cycle of HOT water with a ton of vinegar. That seemed to take away the smell. I started leaving the door open between cycles but the smell of mildew is still in the clothes. It's so frustrating!!! I have many loads of laundry to do and each cycle takes over an hour. Currently, my machine runs continually one day a week ALL DAY. Sometimes, I really need to run a load prior to going to bed just to keep up but I can't because of the fear of mildew setting in. My husband and kids say they have the smell on their clothing. It's more subtle, but it's still there. I know it's coming from the machine. This machine is like a yoke around my neck!

Listen....I have 9 chidren, yeah I said 9 children and I bought a Electrolux front load to minimize the work load and it seems that with the rewashing of smelly clothes and with the amount of repairs I have had to make to the unit, I am having second thoughts. I can't believe that even after you drop $3500 you still can have this many problems.........Arghhhhhhh

Don't Waste the $$$$
by: Greg

I bought the first machine about 2 years ago. First issue was a cracked water pump housing that spilled water all over and caused ceiling and wall damage on the floor below. Took so long to get replacement parts that the VP of Customer Service at Samsung USA got involved. He eventually had the machine replaced. New machine had issues with the wiring harness getting coated form the detergent, softner, bleach, etc causing a short that would shut down the cycle and give me a temperature sensor code. Part of the wiring harness was spliced out and repaired. Now, after getting a temperature sensor code and cycle shut down again (maybe 12 months on the new machine), the repairman tells me that there is so much internal corrosion that it would not be economically feasible to repair the machine. So will be replacing the pair after about 26 months of ownership, and one year of use on the replacement machine we are shopping for a new - and different brand - this weekend. By far, the worst buying experience of a major appliance in my lifetime. Piece of $#!T from the start!

Bleach Marks
by: Anonymous

I just got off the phone with Samsung about getting orange bleach marks on our clothes and they are trying to say its poor quality in the clothes and has nothing to do with the machine. I say thats a bunch of crap, and you don't want me to get started with the poor customer service I am getting. What I find so interesting is that Leons gave me a new machine to replace the first one that had the same issues with, but Samsung says its not thier machines fault, why would Leons just give me a new one if there was no problems in the first place? I think they are all trained to tell you that they UNDERSTAND your problem and someone will get back to you in 24-48 hours. I will never purchase anything made by or with the name SAMSUNG on it for as long as I live. I also am going to make this known to everyone I possibly can that they are just a bunch of crooks, and heaven forbid you need something fixed on warranty.

Front Loaders vs Old Machines
by: Anonymous

The musty smell is what one person said exactly. Older, non-HE (High Efficiency) machines that opened on top were not sealed since water would not leak from the top. ALL BRAND front loaders are HE (Use much less water) and the wash cycle will be longer due to less water use, plus they are so water tight that residual water will be in the detergent fill area and on the OUTER tub (The part you can't see- you can see the INNER tub when you look inside a machine. Most front loaders now have a "clean" cycle, where you must run it without clothes on HOT with either bleach or those cleaning tablets they sell in all the stores. Maybe a minor pain, but we are saving the earth's resource of clean drinking water.

Happy with my Samsung machines
by: victoria

I have had my Samsung machines for 2 years and I can still say I am very happy with them. If you have never had a front loader, and this holds true for ANY front loader, not just the Samsung, you must realize that if you don't take the proper measures, they will get a mildew like smell to them. Think about it, the door HAS to seal so that it doesn't leak all over the floor, correct? The washer is not a combination washer/ dryer unit in one, therefore, it is virtually impossible for it to dry competely if the door is closed when not in use. I don't care what brand you buy, if it doesn't get aired out, it's going to smell! You also should be taking a paper towel with bleach on it and wipe out the seals about once a month which aids in keeping it fresh. In addition, you simply CANNOT leave clothes in the washer after they are done washing! That goes with ANY washing machine! I also pour some vinegar in the bleach cup when I wash towels to help keep things fresh. If you do these things, and I mean faithfully, I guarantee you will not have a problem, period.

My machines are stacked and one time the legs had to be adjusted because it was off balance. The technician told me to put a board underneath them to support the weight...and voila! Problem fixed!

Moral of the story...don't believe every negative review you read...it may just be that the person giving the review is upset because they haven't been properly educated.

Total junk!
by: Madashell

My top of the line Samsung washer purchase has been the biggest mistake I've ever made buying appliances. Never have I been so let down. Reading the posts below, I've noticed that the folks that are the happiest are the ones that have not had their machines very long just wait, you guys! And when you call Samsung and get the young Phillipino gal on the line, be ready for even more frustration.
This really is a piece of crap washer. So smelly the whole house smells! Leaving the door open? Always. No help. Why should one have to clean the seal? Never did this on my old Fridgidaire washer. The filter is impossible to drain without making a mess. Wait till some of that smelly water gets under the washer where it's hard to clean up! This machine is a nightmare.
And this thread does not even deal with the noise generated by the spin cycle! VRT my butt! Sounds like it's coming apart!

DON'T LET YOUR FRIENDS BUY A samsung!!!!

stinky machine
by: pam

We have owned our Samsung VRT front loader for about 18 months. The stench started immediately. My husband cleans the filter, I run miracle treatments through it and it stays smelly. We use Afresh, Tide Cleaner, bleach, vinegar, and baking soda. Nothing works! I am very disappointed in my machine. I was so excited to be able to finely aford such a beautiful washer. Well, that's it "looks aren't everything". My old Sears top loader worked much better, it just didn't hold as much.

I've had this machine for over 2 years now. At first my only problem was that it insists on "walking" I've tried everything but can't get the legs right. I can make it stable for a few weeks at best but eventually it's up an moving again. Now I have a terrible moldy smell coming from it. I have to leave the door open at all times when not in use or it gets really bad. I really would not recommend this machine.

Machine Does Not Clean
by: Elizabeth Mercier

This machine is a HUGE frustration! I bought this machine last week- I have used it for 1 week- and it is not getting the clothes clean! For the amount of time it takes to run, it SHOULD get the clothes- it doesn't: the whites are dull, dingy and off-white (even with Clorox bleach added to the wash) and all the clothes retain a gummy stickiness. The items are half-washed and unrinsed. If I could offer my true rating, this machine gets NO stars!

Don't Say I Told You So!
by: Nichole

I had a Whirlpool top loading machine that got passed down to me when I moved out of my parents house. In total my family and I had used it for about 10 years before the spin cycle was bunk and we had to re-spin clothes 3 to 4 times more before it was safe to even put them in the dryer. I begged my husband for a front loading HE washer. It's new, digital and supposedly very good for the environment. I eventually wanted to get the matching dryer, when it was affordable.
Upon purchasing the machine, we were told that it would cut the washing time and drying time in half, as well as use 1/3 of the water a top loader uses. I have been washing my clothes in the Samsung since May 8th, 2010 (I know this because Sears made me wait over a month for the washer to even be delivered to the store and I anxiously counted down to this date). My clothes have been smelling moldy for a month now, now matter how dry the inside of the machine is, no matter what detergent I use, and no matter how much bleach or baking soda I use.
I do not let my damp or wet towels sit in a basket for more than a day because I know that machine will not get the musty smell out. My family's shirts still smell like sweat (as it is the hottest months of the season). If you leave a sock bundled up, when you shake it out, the inside is smelly and still dirty.
The one positive thing I have to say about this machine is that my clothes are not stretched out and baggy when I wear them. They are fitted now which is pretty cool! I also like the delicate cycles, but you should probaby put your bras in seperate mesh bags. I washed about 6 bras at the same time and even though I made sure to fasten all the snaps it was an awful, tangled mess.

Best decision I ever made
by: Diana J.

I received my Samsung WF448 front loader with pedestal in April 2010. I purchased mine from Best Buy. They delivered it, set it up, balanced it, and made sure that it started before they left. I bought the Black Tie service agreement too because I was worried about repairs from some of the horror stories that I read online about front loaders in general. The reviews about Samsung's lack of customer service made me nervous. So if I do have any issues in the future, I will call Best Buy instead of Samsung.

I have had no mildew issues of any kind so far and I live in Houston, TX one of the most humid places in the US. I did some research before I bought this washer. I make sure to wipe the door and the seal dry when I am finished washing. I leave both the door and the laundry dispenser open as well. I also clean the trap regularly to remove the dog hair (I have several dogs). I use the Shaklee HE liquid laundry detergent but no softner. I prefer to use the Shaklee dryer sheets instead. My clothes come out cleaner than my previous Kenmore Elite top loader could ever get them. They are also not all twisted and beat up. I look forward to my wardrobe lasting longer with this new washer. My delicates have never been cared for better and my bedding and towels have never been better sanitized. :)
I love how quiet it is when it's running. I have it on a tile floor. I don't hear any vibrations. My only complaint is that I wish the little tune that it played when the cycle was complete was louder. I have it set to the "loud" setting and I can barely hear it from the living room. So instead, I make note of the time till the load is finished on the display and go back and check on it when the time has passed.
I hope to continue to have a long and wonderful relationship with my new washing machine. I hope this review helps some people make an informed decision about this Samsung washer. :)

I am very disappointed in my Samsung front loading washer it has a terrible smell and tremendous odor from mold and mildew build up in the rubber seal in the front of the machine. I do not understand why the company did not recall the machines that did not have silver care or sanitizer cycles this is a poor design and I will not purchase a Samsung product again. eps since I registered my machine they did not send out a email to inform us of the issue and ways to deal with it when they began receiving complaints.

love it - cleans great
by: deb

I chronically have stains on the front of my tops and with some pre-treating this gets them out just great AND if I forget to pre-treat I have gone back pre-treated and re-washed with great success. Also with the longer spin time it takes hardly any time at all for clothes to dry. I leave the door open to dry completely overnight after use and have had no problems with mold or mildew. I have several dogs - thus lots of dog hair accumulates inside the rubber seal at the bottom and I just pull it out each time I wash bedding. It is great.

Junk all Junk and no spin or cleaning done!

This washer and dryer are absolutely junk. Make sure you find out who owns Samsung now, because these companies trade like popcorn. It is absolutely the worst (doesn't wash), that I've ever had. As another I read, Stains and pre-treat and still stain after stain after stain. This machine has cost me an entire wardrobe for our family. i am going to be seeking my clothing back from the Sansung company. We all need a class action for damages. Not just for the junk washer, for the stress and money put out by ruined clothing repeatedly.

The front of my washer within 6 months, was rusted because of a seal gone bad. That is where they place the serial number and we were told if your remove it the warranty was void by their customer service. So, write down the numbers or you won't have any recourse and put them in a safe place. This company should not be allowed to get away with highway robbery. It amazes me how we have all of these consumer protection agencies and this goes on. Boy is our money spent really well. DON"T BUY THESE MACHINES THEY ARE JUNK.. Mom with kids...

Samsung Top Load Washer
by: Anonymous

I had been using a 47 year old Maytag top loader that worked great. The top lid had a minor problem but other than that it did what it was designed to do. They really made them well in those days and the college guys I gave it to a year ago says it still working like a champ and it probably will for another normal washer lifetime of 10-15 years at least.
I got rid of it because my wife was embarrassed by it's age and wanted a front loader to match the front load dryer we bought earlier that year. Guys...That,s how it always starts with buying unnecessarry stuff for the house....you know... buy a new fridge and then you are into it for a new dishwasher, stove, oven, microwave,to match etc...
As for the new front loader I do not think my clothes are any cleaner because of it and have noticed a musty smell from time to time in my clothes that are home washed. The wife has mentioned that it does take longer to wash the clothes. I told her I could probably get the old one back on a trade but she was not agreeable to that as you might expect.

Love my Samsung 4.0 Front Load Washer VRT
by: Carol

I love my Samsung 4.0 VRT front load washer with Silver Care.

It is quiet and I love all the options I have washing the clothes. I read the previous reviews and I haven't had any smell problem. Like the lady say previously, leave the door open, wipe off the rubber seal, fabric tray and take your clothes out when they are done and there shouldn't be a problem. This only takes a couple of seconds.

I had bought mine at Future Shop, they were awesome, great deal and the delivery driver and his mate put the pedestals on & hooked it all up for me. I have no vibrating problems or anything.

In the manual it does say that when using the fabric softener and you just add a bit of fabric softener to add water to the compartment that holds the fabric softener with water to the line that says maximum. I don’t use the fabric softener each time I wash. I use half a bounce in the dryer mostly.

You don’t need hardly any soap and use HE. In fact I was told to use ½ the amount that the bottle said. That is what I do and my clothes are clean. In fact, I was told that too much wasn’t good.

Note: I had shopped around and talked to different sales personnel and I was told by one that he had a repair guy tell him that problems he encountered was for some reason the front load washers don’t seem to like the fabric softener. Perhaps people are putting too much soap and softener in their machine. You have to buy HE soap.

My daughter has a LG front load washer, and it stopped working in the middle of a wash cycle one day because the filter was clogged with dog & cat hair. She had to look up in the manual what the code meant on the washer indicating there was a problem. She had to empty the front load washer from the bottom of the machine and she said it was hard to get at and took 3 hrs sitting on the floor with a shallow pan draining the water out. She said the water was coming out in the size of a straw. She never read her manual on how to care for the machine and didn’t realize it had to be cleaned. Now she is cleaning her filter for her washer.

Perhaps some of the problems others had on the vibration problem is maybe it wasn’t level. I gave the guys a level to use to make sure mine was level when setting it up.

My advice out there to everyone is to read your manuals and how to care for your machine.

So far so good! I am impressed with this machine.

Great Machine!
by: Anonymous

We use the machine daily. We do not use too much soap (major cause of foul odour), we leave the door open when not in use (d'uh!) and do not have any odour problems.

If properly mounted on pedestal, there is very little vibration or noise.

These machines are like any other mechanical machine, if you take care of them and do the proper maintenance, they will work as designed.

If you plop it in your laundry room, and abuse it, then......

Front Load Washer
by: Anonymous

We purchased a Samsung Front Load Washing Machine within the past 6 months. We had also read that there was a potential that they could have a foul odor. I am an Independent Norwex Consultant and I wipe the door and the front seal with a Norwex Antibac Microfiber Cloth and have had no problems at all. I use a teaspoon of the Norwex Laundry powder Detergent, which is far less than I used before, and the detergent lasts much longer than my previous brand. I love my washing machine and so glad that I purchased it. I have found that it is much more efficient than the top loading models.

moldy and smelly issues
by: Deb (again)

I too was concerned when I read lots of reviews re this problem with FLs. In my research I have found that the common problem was the use of liquid detergents and fabric softeners. They both contain veg. oil which causes the mold to build up and can cause problems associated with service calls. I don't plan on creating this problem for myself and have given my liquid products to my mother-in-law who uses a laundromat. I use half the amount of detergent and use vinegar as a softener. I washed flannel sheets and was so amazed at how clean smelling and how soft they were. I am also treating this expensive machine like it should be, wiping it down after use, including under the door gasket, the dispense tray and leaving the above open to air dry overnight. Most appliances (and vehicles) will last a long time and treat you well, if you treat them well.

Having said the above, I am keeping my fingers crossed as I do not wish to have mold, smelling clothes and costly repair visits. Only time will tell if my plans work to my advantage!

I HATE this washing machine!

I really Hate this machine. It is most frustrating, time consuming, appliance I have ever owned. (My last washing machine was a front loader too and it worked much better). My clothes don't come clean. I never use to pretreat my clothes unless there was a stubborn stain. Now I pretreat everything, and I still have stains.
There is lint all over everything -- even things I've had for years without a problem. I've had this machine for about 9 months and I am ready to buy a new machine. I didn't spend this much for a machine that actually takes more work. The dryer that matches is just as bad. Nothing gets dry. If you are looking for a new washing machine and dryer buy something else!

So Far So Good
by: Becky

I just received my Samsung 419 VRT Steam Washer and Dryer about a month ago. Yes, it is definitely different than the top loader that I've had all my married life. (26 years). I have to do laundry totally different.

far I haven't had the problem of any smell or mildew. I was told by many of my neighbors that this would be a issue if I didn't clean the rim or keep the door open. They all had that issue even though they had a different brand of washer but were all front loaders.

The biggest complaint I have is the time it takes to get a load of laundry done but I guess that comes with the territory of the front loader. The wash will spin one way and stop and then spin another. Again much different from the top loaders. As far as the clothes being clean. I too have to pre treat before I start my wash. That seems to help. It's hard to comprehend with the little water it uses that the clothes are actually getting cleaned. They do spin out pretty dry but I think that is because of the little water that they use.

All in all, so far so good. I pray that I won't have the terrible problems that so many have had. Especially for the price I paid!

I have owned my machine for over 6 months now and I absolutely love it. No mildew smells are in mine. Has been been very easy to take care of. Clothes come out clean and the spin cycle gets them so dry that it doesn't take long to dry them. I basically wipe the water out of the rubber front and dry the front door and leave the door ajar and everything works out well. You can't have something and not do anything to protect it from mishaps. I was told when I bought it that if you wiped it out around the door, you would prevent the mildew problem. They were absolutely correct. Thank you Sears for the sale of a wonderful appliance.

Get rid of mildew smell easily

Have you read the manual that came with your washer? It states to leave the washer door open when not in use. They don't mean wide open, just don't latch it. This allows the washer to dry so mildew won't form. We've had our washer and dryer for over a year and there is no odor in the washer. Also - use the detergent recommended for front loading machines and don't use too much!

Terrible Machine
by: Jasper, GA Woman

I originally wrote on this web site that I was thrilled to own a machine that would wash king size comforters. I would not like to retract anything good I said about this machine.
I have now had it since March 09 and it is the worst washing machine I have ever owned. My last Kenmore Super Capacity lasted nearly 17 yrs. & I loved it. The clutch went out & too $$$ to repair.
This Samsung is so horrible I barely know where to begin. All the comments by other owners are absolutely correct. Musty smelly clothes, expensive laundry detergent needed, expensive odor reducing pucks needed, manual clean out filter, won't get clothes clean. Does not clean large bedding items. The list goes on....How pray tell do they continue to sell these machines????
And just after I paid almost $1,500 for my machine....ON SALE....Samsung came out with a model with 99% of the same features, same capacity etc. for $799.00 at Best Buy !!! I was and am livid that I so overpaid. The $799.00 model was not offered anywhere when I bought my machine....What a rip off !!!

I never thought I would be cleaing a washer so it could do it's job correctly, isn't it supposed to be the other way around! The fact that it is claimed to be energy efficient is a crock! I have spent more money on laundry since we purchased this Samsung and it was not cheap. A new washer is in the budget!

Mold - Mildew Smell

The mold mildew smell is a problem. Cleaning the gasket is not the easiest and hard to tell if it is clean or if that is where the problem is. I do laundry daily, so the machine does not sit idle for long periods. I live in a stilt home in Florida. We live in a wood frame house and bought the front loading machine primarily for the VRT - it is quieter and does not vibrate like other machines, but the mold problem is worrisome. It is not a cheap washer!

crappy machine
by: Anonymous

I have had nothing but problems with this machine. All my clothes and towels just stink like musty old socks. I have been told by Samsung to run a load of hot bleach, put calgonite dish washing detergent and run that through a hot cycle or if that doesn't work, buy these pucks called Affresh pucks and run three at a time the first time. To no avail I still today have this terrible smell. I for one will never buy any front end load washing machine.

washer overall star rating is wrong
by: Anonymous

I think many reviewers are not paying attention to the star rating system. Many, many reviews are negative on this machine but owners are rating this machine at 5 stars. This could not be correct !!! So when reviews are combined, this washer had a high rating when the majority of the comments are very negative !!!

HUGE BUYING MISTAKE
by: J.M. Marsden

Have had this machine since spring and I agree with all the negative comments about this machine. I cannot understand why it continues to sell unless there are people who do not take the time to research this machine on the Internet.
Yesterday, the spin cycle vibrated so much (my washer is on a Samsung pedestal) that a bottle of liquid detergent that was on the dryer almost a foot away from the washer, vibrated so much it fell off the dryer onto the floor, spilling liquid detergent (the top on the detergent bottle was not on fully tight) all over my laundry room floor. Talk about a mess. This machine sounds like a CSX freight train for a long time before the VRT takes over.I fully expect this machine to end up on the basement floor of my home one day, having vibrated thru the laundry room floor and 24 inch floor trusses.I think this ranks as the most expensive buying mistake I have ever made.

Dont buy it i regret it BIGTIME !!!
by: Anonymous

I would give this product a 0 if i could & this is why: I ressearched before i bought and thought this brand [i do love samsung products]sounded like it had least problems including MOLD..WRONG huge problem with mold ..easier to keep off the door..very hard to keep it under control in/on the rubber all around the drum...My clothes always smell musky and if they get wet or damp like tea towels it smells even worse..I have 5 kids & do alot of laundry and always leave the door open. The whole point of buying this machine was because i do alot of laundry..I dont have time to babysit the mold and the cleaner Airfresh they suggest cost a 11.99 for a little bag outrages if u ask me..OH and if u turn the silver care on ur laundry takes so long to finish absolutely ridiculous i don't have time to use the silver care and that was the other big reason i bought this machine....Lastly my dryer computerized controls stop working but i have had this pair for almost 2 yrs but thank god i bought extended warrenty i think i will need it..something i never thouht of is bleaching is very difficult in front loaders they dont soak properly as well ):

Does not have self cleaning filter
by: Anonymous

No one has addressed the fact that this machine does not have a self cleaning filter as you do in almost all top loading machines. Not only do you have to clean the hair and debris out of the front of the rubber gasket after each wash, you have to periodically pull out a tube on the front of the machine, drain it into a pan and then manually clean out yet another filter. This is beyond absurd ! I have 4 rescue dogs that shed despite skin supplements so the dog bed covers, covers for the couch etc. have doggie hair on them. If I had known about this, I would not have bought this machine.
I also agree that it does not clean clothes as it should. A king size light weight comforter just does not get clean. The center of the comforter or the part thantis folded to the inside when you are inserting the comforter into the tub, is clearly not clean when the cycle is finished. I took one comforter to a neighbor's home and washed it in her super capacity top loader and the comforter came out sparkling clean using the same detergent !So now I am driving to the laundry mat to wash my large blankets/comforters/mattress pads etc. which is the reason I got this machine in the 1st place. What a waste of my hard earned money!!!!!!!

Does NOT clean clothes !
by: Anonymous

Very disappointed in my machine that I have had since March 2009. First of all it does not get my clothes clean.(do not mistake the fragrance in the detergents with actually clean clothes) Despite using every national brand of He detergent, stains (mustard, tomato sauce, iced tea, chocolate) still appear after washing. Also used pre stain sprays of very description and OxiClean. I think there is a design flaw in the way the clothes are tumbled in the machine as opposed to being washed in a top loader. The clothes tumble in 1 direction for several seconds, the machine pauses for 5-7 seconds and clothes then tumble in opposite direction. This means that the clothes just tumble on top of each other and the inside of say, a blanket, does not get moved around the tub against itself/other clothes as in a top loader and therefore clean. I had a service guy out and he replaced the "water sensor" so that more water would flow into the machine but that has not worked. In addition, I have a huge problem getting rid of the detergent in the clothes. Put less detergent in and the clothes are really nasty and more detergent and the clothes are not clean AND you have the excess suds issue so the load has be rinsed 3-4 times extra. It's a not worth it and I wish that I had my $1680.00 back big time !!! The new 4.5 cu ft top loaders are the way to go & they are SO much less expensive than these front loaders !Do not buy this machine !!!

worried about stink
by: Anonymous

we bought a new front load samsung and the store salewoman seemed very knowledgable and confident that we'd have no problem if we left the door open a crack. we liked that idea but after it ran i wiped down the rubber gasket at the door and can see there is no way on earth that leaving it open a crack will get the bottom level of the gasket dry. i peeled it back a bit and saw water under the bottom of the gasket. i dabbed a towel there but you can only get so much out. it is very likely to trap the water. i dont want to have to yank like that on the rubber seal every time i am done with washing, think about it you had to upeel the seal on your fridge every time - it will very likely loosen and weaken it after a bit of use. so i am not sure if we should even keep the machine, because having smelly clothes is enough reason to me to return a washing machine. we may return it i am not sure yet. only downside of old style i thought was the middle piece taking up room (toploaders) but otherwise i think the frontloaders tried to reinvent the wheel and didnt do as good of a job as the original.

Remove load promptly
by: Anonymous

I noticed that if I left a load in the machine overnight, it smelled the next morning. Now I remove a load as soon as it's done and I have never had another odor issue. I also leave the door fully open after my last load is done for the day to let the tub dry out completely before closing the door. I think this helps too. Musty mildew cannot grow without water/moisture and warmth so if these 2 things are removed it is absoloutely impossible to have the fungus/mildew issue ! (Thanks go to Good Housekeeping magazine for these suggestions from their testing staff.) Remember that water flows thru the detergent/bleach/fabric softener cup at the top so if you live in a particularily humid area, you might want to pull that out at night to let it dry out also.In closing, I had that musty fungus smell in my Kenmore top loader if I left a load in there too long so I don't think this can be entirely blamed on the fact that your machine is a front loader.....Thanks for reading !

I'm sold !
by: Jasper, GA woman

Am on the hunt for a front loader and was torn between the Samsung and the Elextrolux. After reading numerous postings about problems with the Electrolux I was leaning toward the Samsung. This review has sold me ! An appliance repair friend suggested that the door gasket be wiped down once a week with a bleach/water solution (3/4 cup bleach to 1/4 cup water) to control the mold. He swears it is a problem with ALL front end loaders.Leaving the door ajar is also recommended.Small price to pay for the new 4.5 cu ft model. Now I can wash my king sixe comforters! Thanks for good solid info !
