I agree
by: Ann

Most of you are not reading the original post correclty. Use the dishwasher soap for the machine not your sink/hands. Just so you know, it does not bubble, it can not, if it did it would ruin your dishwasher as well. Why it works is it is derived from cholrine - like bleach. I can not imagine someone running over the clothes washer, did you know that back in the good ol days laundry soap bubbled. I am stunted by the the ignorance of most people, how can you live life and not manage to pay attention? I leave this site for good.

automatic dishwasher not dishwashing
by: Anonymous

The previous posters are referring to using powdered dish detergent that you would use in an automatic diswasher not the dishwashing soap you use to do dishes by hand. The powder stuff works great to whiten laundry!

Bad Bad Bad

I have herd of people doing this in the past and it is a very bad idea. Not only will it damage your clothing it will over run your washing machine with bubbles. Stay Away From Dish Soap.

Completely WRONG Info!
by: Anonymous

PLEASE don't use liquid dish soap! If you are going to use any dish soap, use the powdered kind. The liquid is just as others have described it. You will be overrun with bubbles and it is a lackluster alternative to bleach!

Bad Idea

I absolutely disagree with the original poster. The one time I did this there were suds flowing over the edge of the door.

No!

We tried this once and it ruined our washing machine. Far too much soap! Be careful with how much you put in there-- some brands of soap are meant to keep going and going!

GREAT FOR STAINS ON ANY COLOR
by: DONNA

I have used dish detergent many times on clothing (shirts) with splattered stains from cooking. Just put it on the spots and wash in machine. Works great.

I may have to try this,
by: Carrie

but I actually never use bleach. Borax works great to whiten clothes, and is less than $3 for almost a 5 pound box

My mom has done this for 25 years now

Only she uses the powdered dishwasher soap. I have to admit, it works just as well as bleach.

Reminds me of a Brady Bunch Episode

I am very tentative about this idea since adding dish detergent in the washer could really make a mess- ant more details such as the brand? amount? type? Bleach does a great job, but I am not thrilled about using such a harsh chemical all of the time.

Great idea on bleaching!

I love the tip about using dishwasher detergent if you run out of bleach. It's fun to know alternative ways of doing something in case you run out of a product. Thanks for the tip!

I have done this before and it does work.
But only a small amount should be used since it causes more suds than regular detergent.

Absolutely disagree
by: KathyB

Liquid dishwashing detergent should not be used in a clothes washer!! It makes more suds than seems possible and does not substitute as bleach for clothes.
