Maytag Neptune

by anni
(brandon, fl, usa)

I've never owned a front loading washing machine before, but after having this one, a Maytag Neptune, I will never go back! It was given to us from a relative who no longer needed it since where he was moving already had one.

I was soon pregnant after we received it and realized what a difference it made not having to lean over the appliance to put in, or especially take out heavy soaked clothes. It does a fabulous job getting the clothes clean no matter the detergent I use.

Since it is an HE, or high efficiency, washer it uses less water which decreases the water waste and saves our family money. The HE washers also use less detergent which means saving you money too.

It has simple controls, but many different features. The three different cycles allow you to do a regular load, heavily soiled load (great for kids clothes), and delicate items. You can further your options by selecting max extract, extra rinse or stain cycle or you can choose all three.

There are also selections for delicate, colors, whites or heavily soiled items. It, of course, has an optional audio signal and a door light for ease of use as well.

You can wash large loads, such as linens or bath mats and towels. It is pretty quiet, too, for a washing machine. We have had the machine and it’s dryer mate for over 2 years and the only thing that has happened is the bulb went out inside which is obviously a cheap and easy repair to perform.

I would definitely recommend this washer to a friend based on its performance. All around I’ve been pleased with this machine and if ever I need a new one we will certainly be on the market for a Maytag!

What a disgrace Maytag!
by: Lea Doran

This washing machine is a piece of garbage. My machine is 6 years old and has had 4 service calls - 2 within the first year. It is extremely tempermental with small loads, delicate wash etc. I have had to open the machine and remove wet clothes and then bail out the tub several times - now it won't complete a spin cycle. Clothes are rung out so tight and knotted together and I have great difficulty getting the wrinkles out.

High effeciency my ass!!! Each normal wash takes over an hour for each load so it takes me forever to do 6 or 7 loads of wash at a time. I am getting rid of this machine and buying anything but MAYTAG!!! I have 7 Maytag appliances, all 6 years old, and I am only happy with 2 of them. Whatever happened to the lonely repairman - I bet he's run off his feet now!

Never Buy any Whirlpoop Products
by: Former Maytag Servicer

Don't buy WHIRLPOOP! that Includes: Jenn-air,Maytag,Magic Chef,Admiral,Estate, Roper,Kirkland appliances, Some Kenmore, Kitchenaid!
They screwed the Maytag Dealers out of their customers service contracts making them lose money on warranty repair jobs, Giving their Big Box Retailers all the special pricing and screwing the longtime dealers. ( kinda reminds you of what GM did too)
when any of my Ham Radio friends ask on the AIR I tell them that Whirlpool is nothing more than a tornado in a Toilet!
JUNK!

I owned Maytag's for well over 35 years and swore they were the only machines to buy. However, since Whirlpool bought the company they are nothing but high priced junk. I will never own another one again. This machine doesn't wash the clothes because it won't put enough water into the machine. Customer Service should be changed to Customer disservice.

DO YOUR SELF A FAVOR AND STAY AWAY FROM WHIRLPOOL AND MAYTAG.

The Worst
by: Anonymous

Worst machine ever. Brought in 2005, It has been broke since 2005. Begged and fought Maytag to replace or repair it, all I got was We are sorry. The repair man $1300 worth of work to it when it was less than 2 years old, said it needed more, but He could not fix it. After a little less tahn 5 years, and $$$$ spent in repairs, not to mention the $$$ I spent at the laundry Matt. I have purchaced a Samsung. I will never own another item from Maytag. Completely disapointed.

great for 1 year
by: Cindy

Unit worked great for the first year. After that it was all down hill. The empeller broke twice and had to be replaced, the pump that pumps water out of the unit broke once, the plastic pieces inside the drum came loose and got wedged inside the rubber seal almost causing a fire and ripping and tearing the rubber seal and finally the tub itself cracked. All of the repairs were fixed at my own expense since I was out of the 1 yr. warranty period. I found out that there was a class action lawsut involving this unit. I was never notified of this even though I had registered my washer with Maytag. After I found out about the lawsuit it was too late to make a claim. Washer was 5 yrs old when it finally quit. The Maytag dryer has always worked fine and before my washer broke I purchased a Maytag dishwasher but now I think I'll look elsewhere for a quality product.

never been so disappointed

I am getting rid of this machine as I write this review. I have never been so disappointed in an appliance before. The washer has had many problems, does not clean clothes well, and totally wrings the "@#$%" out of the clothes... Very hard on clothes with poor cleaning. The dryer is equally as bad.

Help Please
by: Anonymous

Our Neptune which is 7 years old and has worked fine suddenly started pouring water. I removed the front panel and found the water is coming from a small hole that is manufactured into the outer drum in front. Any ideas of where the source of the leak could be? It starts leaking after the water has filled partially. I hate to replace the entire washer if it is a small problem but we are having so many problems with the dryer already we are tempted to just junk the whole system.

No problem after two years
by: tammy

After hours of looking for a new washing machine and clothes dryer, I finally decided on the Maytag Neptune Front loading clothes dryer (electric). We purchased it at our local Home Depot (they deliver and take away your old ones for free).

My previous appliances were Kitchenaid. One reason I decided on the Maytag brand was the fact that they have been around for years and they have a good reputation (besides everyone I knew had Maytags and loved them!). Another reason was the features on the Maytag compared to the other brands.

Some of the features include: sensor dry (the setting I always use), wrinkle prevent, wrinkle release, timed dry, air dry and so many more! I like the fact that the dryer is front loading instead of top loading, much more efficient.

Also the lint catcher is directly in the front of the dryer and larger then most dryers. I have noticed that if you leave a penny or something in your pocket the lint catcher always catches it and it ends up right on top of the lint catcher try.

I have had the clothes dryer for two years now and have not had a single problem with it (and I purchased the extended warranty).

Maytags commitment to service is great! You can call them with any questions and they will be more then glad to help you.

I highly recommend Maytag to anyone looking for a dryer.

Great for washing, horrible for mold
by: MaytagNeptuneOwner

I have had this washer for 8.5 years now and it has been pretty good, minus one repair for the motor. It has all the features one can want and cleans the clothes amazingly. My clothes don't wear out as fast. That being said, most front load washers will do the same thing. This one has a mold problem. There are little black dots along the front rim of the rubber seal. I just thought it was wearing out, but now the mold has increased and I do notice it. Maytag had a class action suit about it a long time ago, that has expired. If you google the mold issue, there isn't much you can do. Maytag claims that you have to "wash" your washer with bleach on the outside and leave the door open for 2 hours. That is what I do, but you have to unplug it each time, which is unacceptable. I still have mold, and for the amount I paid for the machine, it isn't worth it. I'll be trying a different brand the next time around, but I will still buy the front loading kind, because it is so convenient. You can put in comforters; there is nothing to get your clothes stuck on; and it doesn't beat up your clothes - let alone the water savings is a bonus! No more Maytag for me! They have ruined their brand reputation with this one and their response to the problems for this one.

major flood
by: Anonymous

This washing machine washes clothes beautifully, but has been a maintenance nightmare. We stared out with the standard mold issue, and got that under control. We had a balancing issue with the drum that had to be repaired. We have replaced the motor once, but yesterday was a doosey. The settings got very confused, cold setting became hot, the load sensor for 2 shirts failed, and the spin cycle became a fill cycle, resulting in the washer filling until the door exploded open and we had a flood. We have owned our Maytag Neptune for 11 years. My grandmothers washer lasted 20-30, I guess the manufacturers are more concerned with us buying every 10 years than making a quality product- so much for ethics.

Owners of Maytag Neptunes with timer dial Please read this
by: Anonymous

If you have the Maytag Neptune front loader with the timer dial then you have the faulty door latch wax motor and it will fail eventually. After your Neptune fails, the Maytag repairman will want around $450 to fix it and you can prevent it by replacing the door latch wax motor.

See www.neptunehelpsong.com for a video that explains the problem and the solution.

Run without incident for 7 years
by: Anonymous

I have had this machine for about seven years now. I was early to join the front-loading washer bandwagon and am happy with my decision to pay what, at that time, was substantially more than the typical top-loading agitator style machines were selling for.

It has run without incident for all that time, although I have to admit that I am a light user -- a single person who runs maybe 3 medium/small loads a week on average. However, it does handle king size blankets easily. King size puffy comforters are just too bulky to clean well in the machine.

Because the washer holds more residual water after the wash cycle than a top-load style, there can be a problem with the water getting a little stinky. Regular use seems to keep that under control.

The washer has a multi-stage compartment on the top for dispensing bleach and fabric softener that work well, as the different machine cycles flow water through the different sections of the compartment in a serial manner.

I do have a small amount of rust forming along the edge of the door that opens to the compartments because all of the liquid doesn't empty out of all the sections every time. The cleaning ability is very good.

It has a timing dial that can be set for heavy/normal/light loads and pre-rinsing options, as well as a push-button selector for delicate to heavy sturdy cotton fabrics, and four choices for wash water/rinse water temperatures.

Especially nice is that I can select a "heavy" load at a delicate cycle using warm or hot water for white shirts and blouses that really does a great job cleaning any yellowing from the armpits. If I had to replace my machine tomorrow, I would definitely try to match the abilities of this one.

Worst machine ever owned
by: jack

Nothing but problems with the Maytag Neptune. I've had to replace the drain pump twice, the door latch switches (both of them). one of the agitator "thingies" got loose, and allowed a small sock to get in between the drum and outer housing.
Now the main bearing is screetching so loud it is almost deafening when in high speed spin. I will never buy a Maytag again

Make sure you check your door latch wax motor
by: Anonymous

Make sure that all you Neptune owners check to see if you have the faulty door latch wax motor. The models affected are: MAH3000, MAH4000, MAH5500A and the 2000 Stacker Neptunes.

The faulty wax motor has the browninsh color plunger pin while the redesigned wax motor has the black plunger pin.

See http://www.neptunehelp.com for more details.

There is a song that explains what happens if you don't proactively replace this component at http://www.neptunehelpsong.com.

Worked great for me
by: Robert Glickstein

The Maytag Neptune is a great front loading heavy duty-washing unit that can handle double loads in an efficient and speedy manner. With a door that does not lock until about five minutes into the cycle, you have the ability to pause the wash and load items you may have forgot.

A normal cycle takes about 40 minutes to complete, which I find to be efficient enough to get a rush job done. There is an extra rinse cycle that I do not use for green purposes, though you may feel compelled to use the extra rinse.

I have found that the spin cycle does an excellent job of ringing out the load. In addition to the normal features found like delicate, whites, colors, and hand washables, there is a stain cycle for that extra duty requirement.

There is a delay ability for those who may need the machine to start at a later time.

As with most front load machines, I do recommend keeping the front door open for 30 minutes after a completed wash to insure no mildew buildup.

This washing machine was a great choice and I will add that the best part about the Maytag Neptune is that I have not had to use my telephone once to call a Maytag rep.

I really love that!

Every Maytag Neptune with wax motor will fail...
by: Anonymous

Yes, the door latch wax motor has burnt lots of Neptune owners. The important fact is that these Q6 and R11 burns on the machine control board can be prevented by proactively replacing the 12002535 wax motor before it fails. The original wax motor has a brownish colored pin. The new design has a black actuator pin.

I have a video showing two wax motors giving a marshmallow Peep the squeeze at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHE7GOo4VCk.

Good machine when it doesn't need fixing
by: Gary

A great machine for washing clothes, but the number of expensive failures associated with my $1,000 MAH4000 Neptune is just unacceptable. I repaired the wax motor and controller 4 years ago and now my bearings are screaching like a jet on take off. I will probably try to repair this issue if possible myself, but this is the last straw for this machine... after this it goes to the scrap heap if anything else goes wrong.

The number of problems is totally unacceptable for an 8 year old machine. I've owned top loaders in the past for 15 years with far fewer problems. Too bad Maytag totally dropped the ball on the Neptunes because they could have been a great machine if properly designed for better reliability. It will be a loooong time before I buy another Maytag, if ever!

Worked for ten years for me
by: Jan

I bought my Maytag Neptune front loading washer at a Circuit City in Bellevue, WA in 1998. Tha Neptune was a new line at the time of purchase and my first front loader. I paid about $900 for the washer and less for the matching dryer.

I love this machine! It has a large capacity drum that holds twice as much as any top loader. I can wash my large comforters in this with no problem. Clothes come out cleaner and water is extracted better so it requires less drying time.

I have used this machine daily for the 10 years that I have owned it and the only trouble I had was when a scrap of paper blocked the drain hole, preventing the water from spinning out. I learned from that and now check the drain hole with each load. The belt did have to be replaced because it got damaged during a cross country move.

I have had this washer and dryer set for 10 years now and hopefully it will last another 10. When I eventually do replace it, it will likely be with a similar model.

Failing on me
by: Steve Henderson

I bought a Maytag Neptune about 9 years ago for two reasons: 1 - the Maytag reputation, and 2 - the innovative design and features of the Neptune model.

The Maytag Neptune washer and dryer provide a sleek looking and ergonomically pleasant pair with the washer providing front loading to an all stainless steel basket. It uses less water, and thus less energy, and has no agitator to wear out your clothes.

However, it has been far from trouble free. We have kept that famous Maytag repairman busy. There have been at least two electronic problems that had to be repaired (out of warranty of course), and the design of washer turns out to be perfect if you want to breed mold at a prodigious rate.

Now the mechanical portions are starting to fail and the machine is making noises like it is on it's last leg. A recent repair estimate came in at over $900 - about what I paid for the machine.

All in all very happy
by: C Bowen

When our old top loading washing machine was making a funny noise, we decided to go look for a new one. We evaluated many washing machines and found teh Maytag Neptune front loading washing machine to be teh best choice. We estimated that with the water and energy savings, we would save enough money in about 7 years to have paid for itself. Not to mention we got 24 months of detergent for free with the purchase(we bought a dryer as well).

It has been about 3 years now and I believe that the washing machine has paid for itself already. Our clothes are cleaner. The Neptune is gentler on our clothes. And the machine is overall quiter than anything that I could imagine. Since it uses HE setergent and less water per load, we are doing our part for teh environment as well.

The only negative is the face plate with all of the controls. We had to have it replaced becasue when you get liquid detergent on it, the writing around the dial comes off as well ( over time). This isn't a big deal except it now looks older than it actually is.

All in all, I am very happy with the purchase

Never take a chance on this one again
by: Anonymous

From what we read and hear, we’ve been some of the lucky ones after purchasing a Maytag Neptune washer and dryer in 2000. Our local washer repairman tells us that these have been a nightmare for him, because none of them work right. We haven’t experienced the problems that other people have had at all. When we first got the washer and dryer we still have teens living at home, and the appliances did a wonderful job keeping up with the laundry loads that were generated. Since that time we’ve moved the washer and dryer twice, and they’ve come through with no problems at all.

If anyone asked us, we’d have to say that our Maytag Neptune washer and dryer have given us exceptional service with no repairs being necessary at all. Prior to having our Neptunes we had several sets of Whirlpool washers and dryers, and none of them lasted very long. In addition, there always seemed to be something going wrong with them that either my husband had to fix or we had to call a repairman for. Not so with the Neptunes.

Another plus for our Neptune washer is that it never goes off-balance and starts jumping around and making noise. It always runs quietly and does an excellent job of getting all of our clothes clean. We’re now in our second home with a laundry room right off the kitchen, and these appliances have never caused us any problem when it comes to functioning in the rest of the house.

Would I recommend these machines to anyone? Probably not, because it sounds like we got the only good pair that was ever made. In addition, Whirlpool took over Maytag and did away with the Iowa plant that made these washers, so who knows where they are being made now. China? Mexico? I’d never take a chance on buying them again. Hopefully they continue to run for a long, long time.

Nice features makes washing easy
by: Anonymous

This is the best washing machine I have ever used at home. I can wash clothes for five people and still have time to catch the football game! Even when my son over fills the washer, it's easy to reset the switch by simply removing the front door and panel. I also like that the diagnostic instruction booklet is right in the back of the control panel. The booklet was an absolute god-send when the washer first went out of balance. Just a couple of screws and voila! Everything you need to know to save those sky high service calls is literally right at your fingertips.

The Neptune also quietly cleans and is easy to clean itself. Just remove the bleach and softener tank, wipe with a damp sponge, and you're all set.

Once you're little ones get around to being tall enough to help out, it is also an easy way to teach them how to wash the laundry. They can push the buttons to select the correct wash time and feel like they've just done a great job helping with the laundry.

The under unit drawers are also a great way to save the back bending pain of laundry day. You can elevate the washer tub to waist level and avoid the dreaded strained back.

From lightweight sports shirts to heavyweight jeans and towels the Neptune washer can easily clean them all without ruining your movie.

Did you bearings go out? This usually makes the Neptune get really loud in spin cycle. If so, you don't need to replace the outer tub (drum) anymore. This washer has given me nothing but problems. Within the 1st 6 months of owning it the board went out on it. After the warranty expired the drum housing and drum needs to be replaced. The cost to do that is $ 675.00. Well it would be cheaper for me to go out and buy anew one. Maytag is of no help what so ever either. Dont try calling their support lines, you'll be just given the run around.

This washing machine washes my clothes quite well. It rates only a 2 though as it has a horrible mold problem. The inside of the door collects water and the water and detergent sit and the rubber gets moldy. I have to weekly clean the door rubber an run emply loads with hot water and bleach to keep the washing machine clean. I believe that this washing machine is part of a class action lawsuit.

Having Lawsuit against them though
by: Anonymous

I have had my Maytag Neptune washer for 5 years. I have 2 kids ages 4 and 2 and do many many loads of laundry. One load/day is a very common day for me, in the winter I do more than that. The washer gets out most stains that my kids get on their clothes. I use the stain cycle quite often and that seems to be a very good cycle for very dirty and stained clothes.

The maytag neptune is involved in a class action lawsuit due to part of the door getting moldy. I do not have a very bad problem with that, it may be because of the shear amount to laundry that I do, or because I also do loads in hot water with bleach at least once per week. I also use the hand wash and delicate cycle quite often.

We do all of out dress shirts and pants at home and have found that the hand wash cycle keeps the clothes in very good shape. We are able to pull the clothes right out of the washer and hang them to dry without alot of wrinkling. Another feature that I use quite often is the max extract feature. Whenever I am washing loads of towels, sheets, etc I can use the max extract function and it will cut my drying time by about 30%. I have found that will make my laundry days go by much quicker.

My family and I also like to use the extra rinse function. One of my daughters has very sensitive skin and we have to be sure that there is no soap residue left is her clothes and to so that we have to sue the extra rinse function of the washing machine. I have found that it does not increase my water bill by too much, but that it does wonders for the sensitivity of my daughter’s skin.

All in all I really like this washer I think that there are some improvements that you can make and if you are not going to be using hot and bleach you might encounter a mold problem, but I have not experienced any of those things and am overall very happy with my washer.

Maytag Neptune update
by: Anonymous

The older Neptunes, such as the 2000 Stackers, MAH3000, MAH4000 and the MAH5500A series had some issues which I am sure Maytag has corrected these issues in the newer machines...

There are thousands who have been burnt by the door latch wax motor failure. What happens is the machine will stop spinning because the door latch will fail to lock. Deep inside it is caused by the mechanism that locks the door. The wax motor will draw too much current and damage the control board by burning a resistor (R11) and a triac (Q6).

However, if Neptune owners know to replace the door latch wax motor they can prevent the control board failure from happening. Please tell everyone you know about this important fact.

The older Neptune’s also have a couple additional issues such as the moldy door boot and the reliability of the motor / motor control board. All three of these issues were involved in the class action lawsuit a couple of years ago. See http://www.neptunewaxmotor.com for more Neptune information.

In addition, I just now started offering a bearing and seal kit for the Neptunes because when the bearings fail Maytag wants you to replace the whole outer tub for a service quote of around $900 or so. Why replace the whole outer tub? Just replace the worn bearings and 12002022 seal… See http://www.neptunebearing.com for the Neptune bearing kit information.

The older Neptunes run great once you take care of some small details...
