Maytag Neptune MAH5500B

This has been the best washer I have ever had. I bought this washer in 2000, with the matching dryer. Before getting my new Maytag Neptune, I was given an older Maytag that was actually my mother in-laws. She always told me that she will never own any other brand.

I just thought she was being over dramatic. But as it turned out the Maytag she gave me lasted a total of 16 years before haven to be replaced. Maytag's slogan is, "Built strong to last long." And now I know that is 100% true. With that in mind I knew I wanted to get another Maytag. When We went shopping for a new washer there was salesman, working on commission, who was only interested in selling me the more exspensive brands.

I kept looking at the Maytag section of the sales floor. The salesman tried to get my interested in anything but a Maytag. That is when my husband told me, "the salesman knows that Maytags will last a lifetime and he wont be able to make a sale off of us ever 1 or 2 years." I told the salesman, "Listen, I am here to purchase a Maytag and only a Maytag!" Shocked he told me, Well have you seen the new Neptunes?"

As soon as I saw it and read all of the functions I knew I wanted it.

When I bought my Neptune home and used it for the 1st time I was speechless. I had never seen my clothes look so clean. It even got out stains that were set in (with the help of some Oxygen cleaning spray). I have never been so happy with a washer. I ever sold my dryer and bought the Neptune dryer. O

ur family doesn't spend a lot of money on clothes so I was the clothes we do have many times. Now all my family's clothes stay new and clean as the day I bought them.

MAH5500BWW PROBLEM
by: Anonymous

The first Maytag washer that I owned lasted 15 years. The next Maytag that I bought, from Best Buy, lasted only four years until the transmission went. I had to get rid of it. I bought an MAH5500BWW four years ago. The main bearing, for the drum, just failed. Luckily I bought the extended warranty. Maytag now has to send me a check for a new machine. I will not buy another Maytag washer.

New motor conversion kit runs $174
by: Anonymous

When you get the locked rotor or (LR) failure code on your Maytag Neptune front loader that indicates that the motor control board has failed.

The new motor conversion kit includes a new motor control board and a new motor because Maytag has redesigned both components to be more reliable.

It takes about an hour or less to install this kit which is delivered to you via UPS Ground.

See http://www.neptunehelp.com order form to order.

Worst Washing machine i ever had
by: Roger

Just after using it for 3 years, this washer has gone bad. The motor is useless and cant turn. It gives me a LR sign, indicating the motor has failed. The repairman said need to replace the motor and will cost 500$. Rather than that, I will buy a brand new washing machine, this time, definitely not a maytag product.

a horror story
by: LaRayne

Wow nothing like buying from small town USA appliance store and not being told there was a class action suit over the washer they were selling you. Yep that happened to us. March 2006 we purchased this machine. Funny how the class action was over in about 2004-05.

Not really this POS is the worst machine we owned in 35 years. It took me awhile to believe that yes MY LAUNDRY STINKS and finally one night I was soo fed up I went to Google and looked up STINKY LAUNDRY. Oh yes there it was MAYTAG NEPTUNE

So after reading horror stories and filling the machine with bleach and odor tablets it subsided but never really left. Now 3 years later this past week the PUMP went out. Oh and the dealer came over today and kindly gave us a $250 repair estimate. Of course I am going to junk it as that is what it has been all along. A PIECE OF JUNK.

A piece of junk
by: Ginger Nelles

A piece of junk. After only 3 1/2 years it is useless. We paid $800.00 for it and a repairman just told us it's going to cost $800.00 to fix it. The bearing holding the basket has gone bad and we have to replace the entire thing. The company would only give us 50% off the part. Nothing on labor.

I'll repeat myself, a piece of junk and the company knows it. We are not the only ones who have had this problem with this machine. It also has a problem with mold and mildew odors on the clothing.

Worst Machine my family could purchase
by: Anonymous

This is the possibly the worst machine a family could purchase. It's strange that this site only asks for the best reviews - I had hoped this was an unbiased site.

Fortuntately, if one enters Maytag Neptune in any search engine, they will quickly see that a Maytag washing machine is most certainly a product they would not want to own. The mold on the inner door, the multiple repair calls within a short timespan of 5 years, the unreliability of the Maytag product make one wonder if the Maytag repairman is someone our parents imagined. The Maytag Neptune performed as poorly in our home as it did in the many homes that received part of the settlement Maytag paid out.

I found it to be a poor product and we will purchase a new machine rather than have another service call. Given that Whirlpool has purchased Maytag, I guess we'll have to stay away from Whirlpool as well.

As the saying goes, you are the company you keep and it seems fiscally silly to give Whirlpool the benefit of the doubt, given the performance of the product line they purchased.

Been reliable for us
by: Anonymous

We purchased the Maytag Neptune washing machine when we bought our first home five years ago. We had seen many ads for this brand and were interested in hearing more about it. The saleswoman at Sears was very knowledgeable and helpful. Upon taking a closer look at the Neptune, we liked the fact that it was a front loading washing machine.

She also explained to us that it did not work by using an agitator, but instead rotated causing less wear and possible damage to you garments. The wells for soap, bleach, and fabric softener are conveniently located on the top of the machine and are clearly labeled to prevent confusion. Also the soap, bleach, and fabric softener can all be added when you start the load and will be added to the cycle at the appropriate time. No more setting the timer to remind you to add the fabric softener.

The big selling point was the fact that it would easily fit large amounts of clothes (important to a family with 2 young children) and it would easily fit a king sized comforter. It has most definitely come through when having to wash larger loads of laundry. With our son now playing football and lacrosse, the Neptune easily fits his uniform, his pads, and all the layers he was wearing underneath to keep warm.

I believe the only draw back is that you have to be very careful that stains do not form on the inside rim of the door. After the wash cycle is complete, water will sometimes still in the door well and cause mold to form. It can easily be dealt with by leaving the door ajar so the inside air dries or by cleaning it with bleach. But you do have to be vigilant.

I would also like to say that over the past five years this machine has been run at least once or twice a day every day. We have never had a mechanical problem with it. Our clothes come out clean and have remained undamaged through many washes. Overall, the Maytag Neptune was a wise investment for our family.

WORST WASHING MACHINE
by: Anonymous

I bought the same model Neptune and was lucky to have it with no problem for 5 years! But, soon after the drum would not spin and the door locked even after the whole machine shut down. After getting a repair guy come out to check it out he advised me that to repair it ..it would cost $550 dollars plus labor. He also advised me not to repair it and go buy and newer one.

Older Maytag Neptunes need attention
by: jeff

The older Neptunes, such as the 2000 Stackers, MAH3000, MAH4000 and the MAH5500A series had some issues which I am sure Maytag has corrected these issues in the newer machines...

There are thousands who have been burnt by the door latch wax motor failure. What happens is the machine will stop spinning because the door latch will fail to lock. Deep inside it is caused by the mechanism that locks the door. The wax motor will draw too much current and damage the control board by burning a resistor (R11) and a triac (Q6).

However, if Neptune owners know to replace the door latch wax motor they can prevent the control board failure from happening. Please tell everyone you know about this important fact.

The older Neptune’s also have a couple additional issues such as the moldy door boot and the reliability of the motor / motor control board. All three of these issues were involved in the class action lawsuit a couple of years ago. See http://www.neptunewaxmotor.com for more Neptune information.

In addition, I just now started offering a bearing and seal kit for the Neptunes because when the bearings fail Maytag wants you to replace the whole outer tub for a service quote of around $900 or so. Why replace the whole outer tub? Just replace the worn bearings and 12002022 seal… See http://www.neptunebearing.com for the Neptune bearing kit information.

The older Neptunes run great once you take care of some small details...
